In a deeply disturbing incident in southern Bangladesh, a pharmacy trader was brutally killed after assailants reportedly dug through the earthen foundation of his home and forced entry during the night. The attack took place in the early hours of Sunday in Maheshwaripur village under Maheshwaripur Union in Koyra Upazila, triggering widespread fear and shock across the locality.
The deceased, identified as 40-year-old Bhabotosh Mridha, was a resident of Ward No. 3 of Maheshwaripur Union. He was the son of the late Jashoda Mridha and ran a small medicine shop at Gilabari Bazar, supporting his family through his business. He lived in the same household with his wife, children, and elderly mother.
According to local accounts, the attackers struck between approximately 1:30 a.m. and 3:00 a.m., when the household was asleep. They allegedly excavated a large opening by cutting through the rear earth embankment of the house, creating a concealed entry point. Once inside, they launched a sudden and violent assault on Bhabotosh Mridha using sharp weapons. His wife, Bibha Mridha, was also injured during the attack.
Neighbours reported hearing screams in the night but arriving too late to prevent the tragedy. When residents reached the scene, they found the victim in a critically injured condition. He was rushed to Koyra Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
The victim’s mother, Ashulota Mridha, described the horrifying moment she discovered her son lying in a pool of blood after hearing her daughter-in-law’s cries. She stated that the attackers had entered by digging through the earth, leaving the family with no warning of the intrusion.
Locals further reported that the household consisted of multiple family members sleeping in adjacent rooms at the time of the incident, which intensified the panic once the attack began. Authorities noted that the house showed clear signs of forced earthen entry, supporting eyewitness claims.
Bibha Mridha, who sustained injuries, reportedly told investigators that she recognised one of the attackers and suggested that longstanding disputes over land ownership could be a possible motive. However, police have stated that the investigation remains ongoing and no definitive conclusion has been reached.
Law enforcement officials also indicated that the incident does not initially appear to be a typical burglary, as no valuables were reported stolen from the residence.
