Detectives from the Dhaka District North Detective Branch (DB) have arrested two young men in possession of illegal firearms, ammunition, and a substantial quantity of narcotics in Savar. The raid, which led to the arrests, was conducted late Thursday night in the Palowanpara area of the Rajashon neighbourhood within the Savar municipal limits.
Inspector Saiful Islam, who heads the Dhaka District North DB unit, officially confirmed the details of the operation on Friday night. According to police intelligence, the two suspects had established a criminal base in the area, using the threat of armed violence to exert territorial dominance while simultaneously running an illicit drug distribution network.
Suspects and Recovered Seizures
The arrested individuals have been identified as Russell Babu (22), son of the late Abdul Goffar from Maheshpur-Baona village under Hakimpur Police Station in Dinajpur, and Sojib Sarkar (20), son of Jahidul Sarkar from Taraf-Pahari village under Sadullapur Police Station in Gaibandha. At the time of their arrest, both men were residing in a rented accommodation in the West Rajashon area of Savar.
During the meticulous search of their premises, law enforcement officers recovered a dangerous cache of weapons and illegal substances. The seized inventory includes:
-
One foreign-made pistol
-
Six rounds of live pistol ammunition
-
One shotgun cartridge
-
One sharp foreign dagger
-
Three hundred grams of heroin
-
Five bottles of Phensedyl (Fairdil)
-
Two hundred grams of cannabis
Additionally, investigators seized two closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and a Digital Video Recorder (DVR) from the scene, suggesting the suspects monitored their surroundings to evade law enforcement detection.
Legal Action and Remand
Inspector Saiful Islam elaborated on the syndicate’s operations, noting that the pair had been terrorising local residents through intimidation and sustained drug trafficking over a prolonged period.
Following the raid, formal charges were filed against the suspects at the Savar Model Police Station under the stringent provisions of the Arms Act and the Narcotics Control Act. The accused were subsequently produced before a local court, which granted a one-day remand for further interrogation to uncover potential accomplices and trace the origin of the recovered weaponry.
