England began the Test series in emphatic fashion, defeating Pakistan by an innings and 103 runs at Headingley to take a 1–0 lead in the three-match contest. The match was completed in just three days, with the hosts securing victory before the tea interval on the third day.
The result also marked an impressive start to Joe Root’s new chapter as England’s Test captain. His side dominated almost every major phase of the contest, with a powerful batting performance followed by relentless pace bowling leaving Pakistan unable to recover.
After losing the toss, Pakistan were sent in to bat and struggled from the outset. England’s bowlers kept the pressure on and dismissed the visitors for only 171 in their first innings. Rather than allowing Pakistan back into the contest, England’s batters then built a commanding total of 409.
Harry Brook led the scoring with an impressive 91, while Jordan Cox contributed 73. Root added 66 and Dan Lawrence made 51, giving England a substantial first-innings advantage. Pakistan’s Ali Usman claimed five wickets, while Khurram Shahzad took three, but their efforts could not prevent England from establishing a 238-run lead.
Pakistan began their second innings with a huge deficit to overcome and quickly found themselves under pressure again. They lost three wickets for 51 runs before lunch, leaving England firmly in control.
The hosts’ pace attack then intensified the pressure. Ollie Robinson and Josh Tong exploited pace and movement to keep Pakistan’s batters uncomfortable, while Jofra Archer also made a significant contribution. Wickets fell at regular intervals, preventing Pakistan from building the partnerships required to extend the match.
Mohammad Rizwan provided the strongest resistance. Batting at No. 9, he top-scored for Pakistan with 41 runs. Shan Masood made 29, while Abdullah Shafique contributed 15, but there was little support around them. Pakistan were eventually dismissed for just 135 in 37.3 overs.
Robinson was particularly influential throughout the match. Having taken five wickets in Pakistan’s first innings, he claimed another three in the second, finishing with eight wickets overall. His performance earned him the Player of the Match award.
Tong and Archer also finished with three wickets each in the second innings, underlining England’s collective dominance with the ball. Pakistan’s two innings produced a combined total of only 306 runs, fewer than England managed in their single innings.
For England, the victory provides an ideal start to the series and gives Root’s side early momentum. Pakistan, meanwhile, will need significant improvement with the bat if they are to challenge the hosts in the remaining matches.
The second Test is scheduled to begin at Lord’s on 27 August, with Pakistan facing the immediate task of recovering from a heavy defeat and finding a way to counter England’s formidable pace attack.
