A twenty-two-year-old man, identified as Mohammad Rakib, has been apprehended by the police in Chandpur Sadar Upazila for allegedly murdering his forty-five-year-old mother, Jannat Begum. The incident occurred during the late hours of Sunday in Balia village, situated within the Balia Union. According to law enforcement officials, the fatal assault was triggered by the victim’s refusal to provide her son with money to fund his drug addiction. The suspect reportedly confessed to the crime during his initial police interrogation.
Background and Domestic Conflict
Family sources revealed that the victim, Jannat Begum, had been living without the support of her husband, Abbas Khan, who had contracted a second marriage and relocated to Madhupur in the Tangail District. Khan had maintained no communication or contact with Jannat Begum for approximately eighteen months.
Left to manage the household independently, she was frequently subjected to domestic abuse by her eldest son, Rakib, who was known to be severely addicted to narcotics. Relatives noted that Rakib regularly assaulted his mother whenever she refused or was unable to provide him with money to purchase drugs. On the night of the incident, another demand for money was made, which Jannat Begum declined. Infuriated by her refusal, Rakib grabbed a heavy piece of wood and struck his mother over the head, causing fatal injuries. Jannat Begum died at the scene, and the suspect subsequently fled the premises.
Discovery of the Crime and Apprehension
The victim’s younger son, Rifat, confirmed that his brother had struck their mother with a wooden implement, directly causing her death. Relatives stated that Rakib returned to the homestead the following morning and attempted to fabricate a narrative, crying aloud and claiming that his mother had succumbed to a sudden medical illness.
However, family members became suspicious upon discovering distinct trauma marks and lacerations on Jannat Begum’s head. They promptly alerted the local authorities. Officers from the Chandpur Sadar Model Thana arrived at the scene, recovered the body for post-mortem analysis, and detained both Rakib and his younger brother, Rifat, for questioning.
Legal Proceedings and Administrative Action
Following preliminary enquiries, the police formally arrested Rakib, while the victim’s brother, Elias Khan, lodged a premeditated murder case as the primary complainant.
