Bangladesh Whitewash Pakistan, Leap Past India in Test Rankings

Bangladesh secured a historic 78-run victory over Pakistan in the Sylhet Test, completing their first-ever home Test series whitewash and registering a second consecutive Test series sweep against Pakistan. The result was driven by a crucial century from Litton Das during a difficult phase of the match and a six-wicket haul by Taijul Islam in Pakistan’s second innings.

The victory also improved Bangladesh’s position in the 2025–27 ICC World Test Championship standings. Following the updated table published after the match, Bangladesh moved up to fifth place, overtaking India in percentage points.

According to the latest standings, Bangladesh have played four matches in the current World Test Championship cycle. They have won two matches, lost one and drawn one, giving them a points percentage of 58.33.

India, meanwhile, have slipped to sixth place. India have played nine matches so far, winning four, losing four and drawing one. Their points percentage currently stands at 48.15.

Australia remain at the top of the standings. They have won six of their seven matches and lost one, resulting in a points percentage of 87.50. New Zealand occupy second position after recording two victories and one draw from three matches. South Africa and Sri Lanka are placed third and fourth respectively.

In the Sylhet Test, Bangladesh posted 278 runs in their first innings after Litton Das produced an important century. Pakistan responded with 232, handing Bangladesh a first-innings lead of 46 runs.

Bangladesh then strengthened their position in the second innings by scoring 390 runs, setting Pakistan a target of 437. Chasing the total, Pakistan were eventually dismissed for 358, falling 78 runs short of the target. Taijul Islam played the decisive role with the ball in the final innings, claiming six wickets to seal the victory.

The result marks another significant achievement for captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and his side, particularly in home Test cricket, where Bangladesh had previously never completed a clean sweep in a multi-match series against Pakistan. Litton Das and Taijul Islam emerged as the principal contributors in a match that strengthened Bangladesh’s standing in the ongoing World Test Championship cycle.
