A housewife was allegedly murdered after unidentified assailants entered her home in the Gabtoli area of Bogura late at night, according to police and family members.
The victim, Rita Rani Majumdar, 45, was found with her throat slit inside her bedroom in the Mominhata Southpara area of Gabtoli upazila. The incident took place at around 12:15am on Wednesday night.
Rita Rani Majumdar was the wife of Bidhan Chandra Roy, a resident of the same locality. Family members said the couple lived alone at their home, while their son and daughter stayed in Dhaka for educational purposes.
Describing the incident, Bidhan Chandra Roy said that he and his wife had dinner at around 10:00pm before going to sleep in separate rooms. He stated that at approximately 12:15am he woke up after hearing loud banging on the door.
He further said that shortly afterwards he heard unusual groaning sounds coming from his wife’s room. When he rushed to the room, he found Rita Rani Majumdar lying motionless on the floor with severe injuries to her throat.
According to his statement, he then went outside shouting for help and noticed that the main entrance door of the house was open. Local residents were informed and police were subsequently contacted. Officers later recovered the body from the scene.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Humayun Kabir said police were informed of the incident by mobile phone shortly after the killing.
He said officers visited the scene and recovered the bloodstained body of Rita Rani Majumdar from the bedroom floor. The body was found with the throat slit, he added.
Police have launched an investigation into the killing. Authorities said efforts are under way to determine the motive behind the incident and to identify and arrest those involved. Investigators are collecting evidence from the scene and speaking to relevant individuals as part of the inquiry.
No arrests had been reported at the time the information was provided.
The incident has drawn attention in the local area, where residents said they were awaiting the outcome of the police investigation.
