Tragic Drowning Claims Two Teenagers

A tragic incident in a rural area of northern Bangladesh has left a community in deep mourning after two teenage boys drowned in a pond on Thursday afternoon (21 May) in Kathalpara village under Chatra Union of Pirganj Upazila in Rangpur.

The deceased have been identified as 13-year-old Tamim, son of Nuru Mia, and 14-year-old Sadhan, son of Suruj Mia, both residents of Kathalpara village. The two boys were cousins, with strong family ties, and were known locally as school-going adolescents with quiet dispositions. Their sudden and untimely deaths have left relatives and neighbours devastated.

According to local accounts, the incident occurred around midday when four teenage friends went to a nearby pond to bathe, seeking relief from the intense heat. While playing and swimming in the water, Tamim and Sadhan reportedly moved towards a deeper section of the pond. As neither of them were confident swimmers, they quickly began to struggle and subsequently submerged.

Their two companions, realising the danger, immediately raised an alarm and called for help. Hearing the commotion, nearby villagers rushed to the scene and began a frantic search. After some time, the two boys were retrieved from the water in an unconscious state.

They were swiftly taken to the Pirganj Upazila Health Complex, where attending physicians examined them and declared both dead on arrival. Medical staff indicated that the likely cause of death was asphyxiation due to drowning.

News of the tragedy spread quickly through the village, drawing hundreds of people to the bereaved families’ homes. The atmosphere became heavy with grief, as emotional outbursts and mourning filled the area. Community members described both boys as well-behaved and dedicated to their studies, making the loss even more difficult to comprehend.

Local Union Parishad Chairman Enamul Haque described the incident as profoundly heartbreaking, noting that such tragedies affect not only individual families but the entire community. He extended his condolences to the bereaved families and assured that local authorities would provide necessary support.

Residents noted that similar drowning incidents are not uncommon in the area, particularly during hot weather and the monsoon season when children often bathe in ponds without supervision. They attributed such accidents to a lack of swimming skills, inadequate safety awareness, and insufficient parental oversight.

The tragedy has renewed local discussions on the importance of teaching children basic swimming skills, improving supervision near water bodies, and raising awareness among guardians to prevent further avoidable deaths.
