NGO Worker Killed in Joypurhat Crash

An NGO employee was killed after being run over by a truck in Joypurhat town on Saturday morning.

The victim, identified as Mahfuzul Islam Mafu, 45, died in the accident at around 7:00am on 23 May on the main road in front of the Shilpakala Academy in Joypurhat, according to local residents and police officials.

Mahfuzul Islam Mafu was the son of Abdus Samad of Pali village in Joypurhat Sadar Upazila. He worked at the Dinajpur office of the non-governmental organisation BRAC.

According to local sources and police, Mafu had left his home beside the Shilpakala Academy area on a motorcycle and was travelling towards his workplace in Dinajpur when the accident occurred. As he reached the main road, a speeding truck struck and ran over him.

He was crushed beneath the wheels of the vehicle and died at the scene, witnesses said. His motorcycle was extensively damaged in the collision.

Police later arrived at the site after receiving information about the incident and recovered the body. Officers also conducted an initial inspection of the accident scene.

Joypurhat Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Nur-e-Alam Siddiqui confirmed the incident. He said police were attempting to identify the truck involved in the crash.

The officer further stated that no written complaint had yet been submitted by the victim’s family members. Legal action would be taken if a formal complaint is filed, he added.

The accident added to concerns over road safety and heavy vehicle movement on regional highways and urban roads, particularly during early morning hours when commuter traffic begins to increase. However, police did not immediately provide further details regarding the circumstances of the collision or whether the truck driver fled the scene after the incident.
