Dhaka University Marks Nazrul Anniversary

Kazi Nazrul Islam’s 127th birth anniversary will be observed at University of Dhaka on Monday, 25 May, under the theme ‘The Poet of Rebellion, the Poet of Life Nazrul’. The university authorities have announced an extensive programme to commemorate the occasion with due solemnity and respect.

According to the schedule released by the university, teachers, students, officers and employees will gather at the foot of Aparajeyo Bangla at 6:15am. A procession led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr A B M Obaidul Islam will begin at 6:30am and proceed towards the poet’s grave, where floral tributes will be placed and Fateha will be offered in remembrance of the national poet.

Following the tribute ceremony, a commemorative discussion meeting will be held at the grave premises under the chairmanship of the Vice-Chancellor. Among those expected to attend are Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) Professor Dr Abdus Salam, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr Mohammad Al-Mujaddedi Al-Fesani, and Treasurer Professor Dr M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.

The memorial address will be delivered by Professor Dr Mohammad Azam, Director General of Bangla Academy and a professor of the Bangla Department at Dhaka University. The programme will be conducted by Professor Dr Sirajul Islam (Siraj Salekin), Chairman of the university’s Bangla Department.

Teachers and students of the university’s Music Department will also perform Nazrul Sangeet as part of the observance. The musical segment has been included to honour the literary and cultural contributions of Nazrul, whose works remain influential in Bengali literature, music and political thought.

Kazi Nazrul Islam, widely known as the ‘Rebel Poet’, is recognised for his poetry, songs, essays and writings against oppression, communalism and injustice. He was officially declared the National Poet of Bangladesh after the country’s independence. His grave is located on the Dhaka University campus beside the central mosque, where state institutions, cultural organisations and educational establishments regularly pay tribute on significant national occasions.
