Member of Parliament Family Attacked in Jibannagar

An assault has been reported against the family members of Mufti Amir Hamza, a Member of Parliament (MP), whilst they were travelling to his in-laws’ residence from Kushtia. The incident transpired on Monday, 1 June 2026, following the Asr afternoon prayers in the Hasadah Bazar locality situated within the Jibannagar Upazila of Chuadanga District. The physical confrontation resulted in injuries to two individuals: the brother-in-law of the lawmaker, Abu Bakar—who also serves as the Jibannagar correspondent for the national daily newspaper Dainik Kalbela—and the lawmaker’s designated driver, Saddam Hossain.

According to the formal allegations lodged regarding the incident, the primary perpetrators involved in the physical assault have been identified as resident individuals of the Hasadah Bazar area. The named suspects are Mostafizur Rahman Mostak and his two sons, Shahriar and Rimon.

Sequence of Events Leading to the Altercation

Detailing the chronology of the confrontation, the injured journalist, Abu Bakar, stated that the family convoy had departed from Kushtia and was en route to Jibannagar Upazila. The Member of Parliament, Mufti Amir Hamza, was travelling ahead in a primary vehicle, whilst Abu Bakar, his sister, and additional members of the immediate family followed closely behind in a secondary motor vehicle.

Upon reaching the Hasadah Bazar area, a battery-operated easy-bike abruptly positioned itself directly ahead of the family’s secondary vehicle, effectively obstructing their path on the public highway. Despite the driver repeatedly sounding the vehicle’s horn, the easy-bike operator failed to clear the thoroughfare.

Consequently, the family’s chauffeur, Saddam Hossain, alighted from the motor vehicle to converse with the transport driver regarding the obstruction. Following the brief verbal exchange, the easy-bike operator formally acknowledged the inconvenience and expressed regret regarding the traffic incident.

Escalation of Violence and Targeted Abuse

Abu Bakar further noted that despite the resolution of the initial traffic dispute, a group of individuals unexpectedly crossed the roadway from the opposite side and initiated a physical assault upon him. In an attempt to de-escalate the volatile situation, Abu Bakar publicly disclosed his familial identity, explicitly stating to the aggressors that he was the brother-in-law of Member of Parliament Mufti Amir Hamza.

However, the disclosure reportedly provoked the assailants further. The perpetrators increased their aggression and subjected Abu Bakar to direct physical violence, delivering severe blows to his face.

Witnessing the escalating physical confrontation, Abu Bakar’s sister alighted from the passenger cabin of the stationary vehicle to intervene and protect her brother. Upon her emergence, the assailants targeted her as well, using highly offensive and abusive language directed explicitly at her and the lawmaker, Mufti Amir Hamza. The physical altercation left both the journalist and the chauffeur with visible bodily injuries.

Police Intervention and Official Response

Upon receiving emergency notification regarding the violent disruption involving a lawmaker’s family, a detachment of law enforcement personnel, led by the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Jibannagar Police Station, Solaiman Sekh, was immediately dispatched to Hasadah Bazar. The police unit secured the perimeter, dispersed the remaining crowd, and escorted the affected family members away from the scene of the conflict.

Following their extraction from the market area, Member of Parliament Mufti Amir Hamza and his immediate family members proceeded to the Jibannagar Police Station, where they remained present to ensure their security and facilitate the administrative recording of the crime.

Confirming the incident, the Officer-in-Charge, Solaiman Sekh, stated that police forces responded promptly to the emergency call by arriving at the crime scene to restore order. The chief of the station affirmed that the lawmaker and his relatives were being accommodated safely inside the police station headquarters whilst senior investigators reviewed the details of the assault to initiate statutory legal proceedings against Mostafizur Rahman Mostak, Shahriar, Rimon, and any other unidentified accomplices.
