A college student was killed and his elder brother injured following a stabbing incident linked to a land boundary dispute in the eastern Piarapur area of Gaibandha Sadar, Bangladesh. Police have detained two women in connection with the incident as the alleged assailants fled the scene.
The incident occurred at around 9:00 pm on Sunday (7 June) in the Boali Union under Gaibandha Sadar upazila. The deceased has been identified as Ruman (18), a first-year honours student at Gaibandha Government College. His elder brother, Ruhit (20), sustained injuries in the attack and is currently receiving treatment at Gaibandha General Hospital.
According to police and local residents, the conflict stemmed from a long-standing dispute over the boundary wall of land between Rakib, son of Chhana Haji of East Piarapur village, and Ruhit, son of the late Faruk. The disagreement had reportedly persisted for a considerable period before escalating into violence.
On the night of the incident, tensions between the two parties intensified into an argument at around 9:30 pm. During the confrontation, Rakib allegedly attacked Ruhit with a sharp knife, causing injuries. When Ruman intervened to assist his brother, he was also stabbed by Rakib. Following the attack, the perpetrators fled the scene.
Local residents subsequently rescued the injured brothers and transported them to Gaibandha General Hospital. On arrival, the attending doctors declared Ruman dead. Ruhit, who suffered serious injuries, remains under medical care at the same hospital.
In the aftermath of the incident, police initiated an investigation. On Monday morning (8 June), the Officer-in-Charge of Gaibandha Sadar Police Station, Abdullah Al Mamun, confirmed that two women—Baby Begum, mother of Rakib, and his wife Iti Begum—had been detained for questioning in order to assist with the investigation and to identify those involved in the killing. He also stated that the body of the deceased had been sent to the hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.
Authorities have indicated that legal proceedings are ongoing, and efforts are being made to identify and apprehend all individuals involved in the incident. The situation remains under police observation.
