Police in Jamalpur’s Dewanganj upazila have recovered 110 bottles of Indian liquor during an operation in the border area. The recovery was made in the early hours of Monday (8 June) in the Pathorerchar area of Dhangdhara Union under the upazila. No arrests were made during the operation.
According to police sources, the operation was conducted by members of the Sanandabari Investigation Centre following a tip-off. Acting on the information, the team searched the Pathorerchar area and recovered 110 bottles of Indian liquor from a cornfield located in front of the house of local alleged drug trader Palash Mia. The liquor was found abandoned at the site.
Police further stated that the suspected individuals involved in the activity fled the scene upon sensing the presence of law enforcement personnel. As a result, no one could be apprehended during the operation.
The estimated market value of the seized liquor is approximately 440,000 Bangladeshi taka, according to initial police assessments.
Law enforcement officials confirmed that the area, being close to the border, has been identified as vulnerable to cross-border smuggling and illegal trafficking activities. Regular operations are being carried out in response to these concerns.
Officer-in-Charge of Dewanganj Model Police Station, Anwar Hossain, stated that a case has been filed under the Narcotics Control Act in connection with the seizure. He also confirmed that efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest those involved in the incident. He added that police operations to prevent drug smuggling and cross-border trafficking in the border region will continue in the future.
Authorities have said that further legal procedures are underway regarding the recovered contraband.
