A brutal killing in Monirampur upazila of Jashore has sparked widespread outrage after a 45-year-old mason, Inamul Hossain, was allegedly hacked to death for protesting against the harassment of his teenage granddaughter. The incident, which took place on Monday night, has deeply unsettled the local community, raising serious concerns about public safety and the escalation of personal disputes into fatal violence.
According to family members, Inamul Hossain, originally from Jhikargachha upazila, frequently travelled to a village in Monirampur where his granddaughter resides. Known locally as a hardworking and responsible family man, he earned his livelihood as a mason and was regarded as a protective guardian within his household.
The dispute reportedly began when a young man named Rabbi (23) allegedly began making repeated inappropriate advances towards Inamul’s granddaughter, who is a ninth-grade student. The family initially raised the issue within their household and later informed local representatives in an attempt to resolve the matter peacefully. However, tensions escalated after the accused became hostile, leading to verbal confrontations and, according to allegations, occasional physical altercations between the two sides.
Relatives further claim that Rabbi issued open threats against Inamul Hossain following the dispute. On Monday evening at around 9 pm, while Inamul was returning home from a local market, he was allegedly ambushed on the road. Witness accounts suggest that he was surrounded by a group of individuals, including the accused, and attacked with sharp weapons. He sustained multiple severe injuries before the attackers fled the scene.
Local residents quickly rescued him and transported him to Jhikargachha Upazila Health Complex. Due to the severity of his condition, he was later referred to Jashore General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead upon arrival.
The incident has triggered anger and fear among villagers, who are demanding swift arrests and exemplary punishment for those involved. Police have confirmed that a murder case has been filed by the victim’s wife, naming 11 individuals as accused. One suspect has already been arrested, while operations continue to detain the remaining suspects.
