Late Diallo Winner Seals Points For Ivory Coast

A 90th-minute strike from Manchester United forward Amad Diallo ensured Ivory Coast commenced their World Cup campaign in Philadelphia with a narrow 1-0 victory over Ecuador. Coming off the substitutes’ bench, Diallo broke the deadlock in the final minute of normal time, inflicting a cruel defeat on a South American side that had struck the woodwork three times over the course of the match.

Woodwork Denies Ecuador in Opening Period

Ecuador created the more definitive openings during the first half, punishing a series of defensive lapses from the African nation. The first significant opportunity arose when Emmanuel Agbadu committed an error at the back, gifting possession to Enner Valencia inside the penalty area. However, the Ecuadorian captain failed to capitalise, firing his shot over the crossbar.

Ecuador continued to press and came agonizingly close to scoring when John Yeboah unleashed a powerful strike from the edge of the penalty box, only to see it bounce back off the crossbar. Shortly afterwards, Alan Minda ran onto a well-weighted through-ball from Pedro Vite, but his subsequent shot struck the post.

At the other end of the pitch, 19-year-old Ousmane Diomande provided a strong attacking outlet on the right flank for Ivory Coast, though his teammates initially struggled to convert his deliveries. Nicolas Pépé hesitated when presented with a clear sight of goal, whilst another of his efforts was accidentally blocked by Ivorian forward Elye Wahi.

Post-Interval Adjustments and Diallo’s Decisive Strike

The second half began in a similar fashion, with Valencia exchanging a swift one-two pass with Gonzalo Plata before executing a shot that clipped the outside of the post. Following this scare, Ivory Coast adjusted their tactics and began creating the more dangerous opportunities.

The prominent Diomande broke into the Ecuadorian penalty area on two occasions, but sent both of his attempts over and wide of the target. He then turned provider, sending a cross to Wahi, whose powerful effort struck the crossbar to deny Ivory Coast the lead.

Ecuador launched sporadic counter-attacks, forcing Ivorian goalkeeper Yahia Fofana to make a sharp save from a long-range Plata effort, before Joel Ordóñez headed a free-kick just over the crossbar.

With a goalless draw appearing inevitable, the deadlock was finally broken in the 90th minute. Wilfried Singo produced a powerful run down the wing before cutting a cross back to the edge of the box. Diallo met the ball cleanly, guiding a precise shot into the inside of the post to secure a dramatic opening-match victory for Ivory Coast.
