Farmer Fatally Stabbed in Kishoreganj Attack

A 32-year-old farmer was fatally stabbed by unidentified assailants in Katiadi upazila of Kishoreganj on Saturday evening, prompting a police investigation into the motive behind the killing.

The victim, Shafiqul Islam, popularly known as Kala Mia, was a resident of South Jhirarpar village under Ward No. 8 of Lohajuri Union. He was the son of Dula Mia and earned his livelihood through farming after previously working as an auto-rickshaw driver.

The incident occurred sometime after dusk in the South Jhirarpar area. According to local sources, residents discovered Shafiqul lying critically injured and covered in blood in a roadside ditch near the Baishakura Eidgah. Alarmed by the scene, local people rushed to rescue him and immediately transported him to Zahurul Islam Medical College Hospital in Bajitpur.

Despite their efforts, doctors at the hospital declared him dead shortly after his arrival.

The circumstances surrounding the attack remain unclear. Investigators have yet to determine where Shafiqul was first assaulted or the exact sequence of events that led to his body being found beside the road. Police said there were multiple injury marks on his body, indicating that he had been subjected to a violent attack.

The discovery has shocked residents of the otherwise quiet rural community, where neighbours described the victim as someone who had not been known to have any significant disputes.

Amir Hossain, the victim’s cousin and General Secretary of the local Krishak Dal unit, said the family was struggling to understand why Shafiqul had been targeted.

“As far as we know, he had no personal conflicts with anyone,” he said. “He used to drive an auto-rickshaw but had recently devoted himself to farming. We found numerous injuries on his body, yet we have no idea who committed such a brutal crime or what their motive might have been.”

He urged law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure the swift arrest of those responsible.

“This is an extremely cruel and barbaric incident. Our entire family is devastated and we want justice as quickly as possible,” he added.

Police have begun examining the crime scene and collecting evidence in an effort to establish the motive behind the killing. Officers are also expected to question local residents and review any available information that may help identify the attackers.

Katiadi Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Rafiqul Islam said investigators were treating the case as a priority.

“At this stage, the motive behind the murder remains unknown,” he said. “We are preparing the inquest report, and our entire investigative team is working at the scene. Every possible effort is being made to identify the offenders and bring them before the law.”

He added that legal procedures to register the case were under way and that further investigative steps would follow once preliminary forensic and witness evidence had been collected.

Police have not disclosed whether they have identified any suspects or recovered the weapon believed to have been used in the attack. They also have not ruled out any possible motive, saying all aspects of the case remain under investigation.

The killing has heightened concern among local residents, who are calling for a prompt and impartial investigation to uncover the circumstances behind the attack. Family members have appealed to the authorities to ensure that those responsible are identified without delay and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
