Deschamps Returns After Mother’s Funeral

France head coach Didier Deschamps has rejoined the national team’s training camp in the United States after returning to his home country to attend his mother’s funeral, bringing an emotional interruption to his World Cup campaign to an end.

The French Football Federation confirmed that Deschamps arrived back at the team’s base in Boston on Saturday, where he resumed his duties ahead of France’s upcoming knockout-stage fixture.

Deschamps had left the French camp in the United States on Tuesday following the death of his mother. He travelled to France to be with his family and attended the funeral on Friday before returning to rejoin the squad. His temporary departure came at a crucial stage of the tournament, but the French coaching staff continued preparations under the guidance of assistant coach Guy Stéphan.

In Deschamps’ absence, France produced an impressive performance against Norway, securing a convincing 4-1 victory that guaranteed top spot in Group I. The win ensured the reigning European powerhouse advanced to the next stage of the competition with momentum intact.

Forward Ousmane Dembélé was the standout performer, scoring a superb hat-trick as France dominated much of the contest. His clinical display underlined the squad’s attacking strength and provided a timely boost ahead of the knockout rounds. The comprehensive victory also demonstrated the team’s ability to maintain its high standards despite the temporary absence of its long-serving head coach.

Deschamps was expected to take charge of Saturday’s training session at Bentley University in Waltham, Massachusetts, where the French squad has been preparing throughout the tournament. His return restores continuity to the coaching staff as France intensifies preparations for its next challenge.

France are scheduled to face Sweden in the next round on Wednesday, with the match set to kick off at 3:00 am Bangladesh time at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The fixture will determine whether Les Bleus can continue their pursuit of another World Cup title.

Deschamps’ return has been welcomed by players and team officials alike, as the experienced coach resumes responsibility for tactical planning, training sessions and match preparations at one of the most demanding stages of the tournament.

Widely regarded as one of international football’s most accomplished managers, Deschamps has guided France through a sustained period of success over the past decade. His leadership has been credited with creating a disciplined and resilient squad capable of competing consistently at the highest level of international football. His brief absence, prompted by a personal bereavement, was handled by the coaching team without disrupting the squad’s focus or performance.

France’s convincing victory over Norway has strengthened confidence within the camp, while Dembélé’s outstanding display has provided another reminder of the team’s attacking quality. With Deschamps now back alongside his players, attention has shifted fully to the forthcoming encounter with Sweden, where France will look to build on its impressive group-stage campaign.

The French squad is expected to complete its remaining training sessions under Deschamps’ supervision before travelling to New Jersey for the knockout fixture. As preparations continue, the team will be aiming to maintain the form and unity that have characterised its performances so far, while their head coach returns to the touchline after an emotionally difficult week.
