Bangladesh Bat First After Losing Harare Toss

Bangladesh were asked to bat first after losing the toss in their one-off Test against Zimbabwe, which got under way at the Harare Sports Club on Sunday (28 June). Zimbabwe captain Richard Ngarava won the toss and elected to field, hoping to make early use of the conditions with the new ball.

The match marks the beginning of Bangladesh’s first full bilateral tour of Zimbabwe in four years, making it an important occasion for both sides. While the tour opens with a solitary Test, it also includes three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), giving both teams the opportunity to compete across all three international formats.

Batting first in Harare is expected to present an early challenge for Bangladesh. The pitch at the Harare Sports Club has often provided assistance to seam bowlers during the opening sessions before becoming more favourable for batting as the match progresses. Zimbabwe’s decision to bowl first reflects an attempt to exploit those conditions and place the visitors under immediate pressure.

The contest also renews a rivalry that produced a closely fought Test series when the two teams last met in the format in April 2025. Played in Bangladesh, that two-match series finished level at 1-1, underlining how evenly matched the sides have been in recent encounters. With only one Test scheduled on this tour, there is no room for recovery, making every session potentially decisive.

Following the Test, the focus will shift to the limited-overs leg of the tour. Bangladesh and Zimbabwe are scheduled to contest three ODIs on 6, 9 and 11 July, with each match beginning at 1:30 pm Bangladesh time. The tour will conclude in Bulawayo with a three-match T20I series on 15, 17 and 19 July, with all matches set to start at 4:30 pm Bangladesh time.

For Bangladesh, the tour offers an opportunity to build momentum across formats after returning to Zimbabwe for a full bilateral series following a lengthy gap. A strong performance in the opening Test could provide valuable confidence heading into the white-ball fixtures, while Zimbabwe will be aiming to capitalise on home conditions and begin the series on a positive note.

With the hosts choosing to bowl first and the visitors facing the challenge of negotiating the new ball, the opening day is expected to play a significant role in shaping the outcome of the match and setting the tone for the remainder of the tour.
