Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested 506 people in a 24-hour operation across the capital, while 55 cases were filed during the same period, according to police.
Niaz Mehedi, additional deputy commissioner of the DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division, disclosed the information on Thursday (20 August). He said police conducted operations in different areas of Dhaka, during which a range of items, including weapons, narcotics and other evidence, were recovered.
The arrests were made across the DMP’s various divisions, with Mirpur recording the highest number. Police arrested 120 people in the Mirpur division, followed by Gulshan with 93 and Wari with 65.
The breakdown of arrests showed that 63 people were detained in Uttara, 47 in Motijheel, 45 in Lalbagh, 41 in Tejgaon and 25 in Ramna. The Detective Branch arrested a further seven people.
During the operations, police recovered two switchgear knives, 27.510 kilogrammes of cannabis, 231 yaba tablets and five grammes of heroin. The seizures also included one Ena bus, one truck, 17 motorcycles and eight mobile phones.
Police also recovered 597.73 grammes of gold jewellery and Tk 267,000 in stolen cash. In addition, 4 tolas, 15 annas and 5 rattis of stolen gold jewellery were recovered. Two victims were also rescued during the operations.
The seizures reflect the range of cases being dealt with through the capital’s regular police operations, covering alleged involvement in narcotics, theft and other offences. The recovery of vehicles, mobile phones, weapons and precious metals is expected to form part of the evidence in the relevant cases.
The DMP regularly conducts operations across different police station areas of the capital as part of its law-enforcement activities. Such drives involve searches, arrests and the recovery of suspected contraband or other materials connected with alleged offences.
Police said legal proceedings against those arrested were under way. Further action will be taken in accordance with the relevant cases and investigations into the recovered items and alleged offences.
