Technical Faults and Stormy Weather Trigger Severe Bangladesh Blackouts

A combination of technical malfunctions at a major power plant and adverse weather conditions in the Bay of Bengal has severely disrupted coal offloading, knocking nearly 3,000 megawatts (MW) off Bangladesh’s national grid. The sudden deficit has triggered widespread load-shedding across the capital, Dhaka, and numerous districts throughout the country. State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud, formally briefed parliament on Sunday regarding the escalating power crisis.

Delivering a statement under Rule 300 in the National Parliament, the minister detailed the precise operational setbacks that have crippled the national electricity supply. He explained that engineers had to enforce an emergency shutdown at one of the country’s primary power plants after detecting a critical leakage in a boiler tube. Simultaneously, turbulent maritime conditions in the Bay of Bengal have completely halted the offloading of imported coal from anchored vessels, effectively rendering a unit of a vital coal-fired power plant entirely non-operational.

Deepening Deficits and Public Disruption

These dual complications have cumulative-laden effects on the state transmission apparatus, resulting in the sudden 3,000 MW shortfall. The minister acknowledged that the deficit is directly responsible for the frequent, rolling power cuts that have severely disrupted public life, commercial activities, and manufacturing hubs across various regions.

Addressing the political and civic tension arising from the blackouts, the energy minister stated that he had already held high-level consultations with Dr Shafiqur Rahman to coordinate a response. Characterising the current shortfall as a pressing national crisis, the minister made a formal plea to all members of parliament and the wider public to maintain patience. He urged the nation to cooperate collectively with state agencies as technicians work under immense pressure to resolve the structural failures.

Government authorities anticipate that the worst of the crisis will subside within the next forty-eight hours. Technical teams have been deployed to repair the ruptured boiler tubes, and maritime authorities are monitoring the sea state to resume coal offloading as soon as wave heights decrease to safe operating limits. Once these plants resume their standard generation cycles, the grid is expected to stabilise, allowing power distribution companies to scale back the rotational blackouts gradually.

Following the detailed ministerial briefing, the session’s presiding officer, Deputy Speaker Barrister Kaisar Kamal, directed that the minister’s formal statement be officially entered into the parliamentary record in compliance with Rule 300. Despite the government’s assurances of a swift resolution, local businesses and residents remain on high alert as they navigate the immediate economic and domestic fallout of the energy deficit.
