Israeli Defence Hardware Acquired by Saudi Arabia and Qatar

Despite lacking formal diplomatic ties or official military relations with Israel, Saudi Arabia and Qatar have acquired sophisticated weapons and defence equipment from Israeli manufacturers. The disclosure, published on Sunday 28 June by the prominent Israeli newspaper Haaretz, sheds light on the covert channels through which Israeli military technology flows into the Gulf. According to the investigation, both Middle Eastern nations procured advanced air-defence mechanisms and highly complex computerised helmets designed for F-15 fighter jets.

The investigation reveals that Qatar integrated Israeli-manufactured countermeasure systems directly into its state aviation infrastructure. Out of eleven aircraft used by the Qatari royal family, three have been fitted with the “C-Music” airborne laser-defence system. This specific technology is developed by Elbit Systems, a leading Israeli defence electronics company. The sophisticated hardware was installed during various overseas maintenance trips between 2020 and 2022.

Furthermore, Qatar’s acquisition of military hardware traces back to a major bilateral agreement signed with Washington. In 2017, the United States and Qatar finalised a multi-billion-dollar deal for the purchase of advanced F-15QA fighter jets. Under this American umbrella, an Israeli defence firm secured lucrative sub-contracts valued between $150 million and $200 million to supply essential sub-systems. As a direct consequence of this arrangement, Doha received 160 Joint Helmet Mounted Cueing System (JHMCS) units, with each specialised helmet valued at $200,000. The transaction also included the delivery of AN/AVS-9 night-vision goggles.

Saudi Arabia has engaged in similar procurement patterns through third-party contracts. Citing a US Department of Defense statement from 2010, the report details a massive contract signed between Riyadh and the American aerospace giant Boeing for F-15SA fighter jets. Tucked within this international deal was the provision of Israeli-designed components. Saudi Arabia ultimately acquired 452 highly advanced computerised helmets and 462 night-vision goggles of Israeli origin. Photographic evidence and video footage circulating online have recently confirmed Saudi personnel actively utilising this equipment during military operations.

The revelations have ignited intense discussion surrounding geopolitical alignments in the Middle East. Neither Saudi Arabia nor Qatar officially recognises Israel, and both governments frequently criticise Israeli policies on the international stage. Yet, the integration of Israeli military tech into the core defence architectures of Riyadh and Doha illustrates how shared security priorities and Western procurement channels quietly bypass formal diplomatic barriers.
