A government primary school in the Bhেদরগঞ্জ upazila of Shariatpur has come under scrutiny after allegations emerged that an assistant teacher physically assaulted the head teacher following a dispute over leave approval, prompting the formation of an official investigation committee.
The incident occurred at Abbas Ali Government Primary School, where head teacher Ali Asad Mia has accused assistant teacher Delwar Hossain of attacking him inside the head teacher’s office on Thursday morning. According to the complaint, the altercation began when Delwar Hossain requested leave, which was reportedly declined due to scheduled administrative duties at the school. The disagreement escalated rapidly and, as alleged, turned physical inside the office premises.
A 1-minute-44-second video of the incident has since circulated on social media, drawing widespread attention. The footage reportedly shows the assistant teacher entering the room with his young child, sitting briefly before tensions rise. Moments later, a confrontation breaks out, with other staff members attempting to intervene and restore order. The video further shows disruption inside the office, including objects being thrown, before the situation is brought under control.
Following the incident, head teacher Ali Asad Mia lodged a written complaint with both the local police station and the Upazila Nirbahi Officer, Abubakar Siddiq. Acting on the complaint, authorities have formed a three-member investigation committee to examine the circumstances surrounding the altercation and submit a report for further action.
Local education officials confirmed that there had been ongoing tension between the two teachers, reportedly linked to administrative disagreements and personal disputes. The assistant teacher had previously been attached to another nearby government primary school on deputation for six months before returning to Abbas Ali Government Primary School earlier this year.
Speaking about the incident, head teacher Ali Asad Mia alleged that Delwar Hossain had a history of irregular attendance and behavioural issues, claims that contributed to earlier administrative decisions regarding his posting. He maintained that the leave request was denied due to an official meeting scheduled on the same day.
Assistant teacher Delwar Hossain, however, presented a different account, stating that he was under significant personal distress and had sought leave due to his child’s illness. He also claimed that long-standing personal grievances with the head teacher had contributed to heightened tensions, which ultimately led to the confrontation.
An assistant upazila education officer confirmed that an on-site inquiry had already been conducted and a report would be submitted to the district education authorities. Further disciplinary steps are expected following the submission of the investigation findings.
