An unusual disciplinary decision has become one of the major talking points of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after United States forward Folarin Balogun was cleared to play despite being shown a straight red card in the previous round. FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee has suspended the enforcement of his one-match ban, allowing the 25-year-old striker to feature in the United States’ Round of 16 clash against Belgium.
The incident occurred during the United States’ 2-0 victory over Bosnia in the Round of 32, a result that secured the hosts’ place in the knockout stage. Late in the match, Balogun was dismissed after making a dangerous challenge on Bosnia defender Tarik Muharemović, catching his opponent on the right ankle. Under normal disciplinary regulations, a straight red card for serious foul play would automatically rule a player out of the following match.
After reviewing the case, however, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee opted to suspend the implementation of the punishment rather than enforce it immediately. According to the governing body’s statement, the decision was taken under Article 27 of its disciplinary regulations, placing Balogun under a one-year probationary period.
FIFA explained that the suspension of the ban would remain in effect provided the striker committed no further serious disciplinary offences during the probation. Should he be found guilty of a similar offence within that period, the deferred suspension would automatically be activated, and any additional punishment arising from the new incident would also be imposed.
The decision means Balogun will be available for one of the United States’ most significant matches of the tournament. The hosts face Belgium at Lumen Field in Seattle on Tuesday, with a place in the World Cup quarter-finals at stake.
The ruling has also attracted political attention. According to reports in sections of the American media, United States President Donald Trump personally contacted FIFA and requested that the disciplinary decision be reconsidered. Those reports claim that after FIFA announced the suspension of the ban, Trump publicly thanked the organisation for reviewing the matter. FIFA’s official statement, however, did not refer to any involvement by the US President in its disciplinary process.
Balogun has been one of the standout performers for the United States during the tournament. The forward has scored three goals in four appearances, providing a consistent attacking threat and playing a key role in his side’s progress through the competition. His movement, finishing ability and work rate have made him one of the team’s most influential players.
His availability is expected to provide a significant boost for the Americans as they prepare for a demanding encounter with Belgium. Victory would secure a place in the quarter-finals and keep alive the hosts’ hopes of making a deep run in the expanded 2026 World Cup, while Balogun will have an immediate opportunity to repay the faith shown in him following FIFA’s highly unusual disciplinary decision.
