Police have launched a murder investigation after discovering the throat-slit body of a local jeweller inside his locked shop in the Signboard-Bhusirmil area of Gazipur Metropolitan.
The victim, 42-year-old Abul Kalam Azad, was found on Sunday afternoon after concerned relatives and fellow shopkeepers broke open the padlocks of Sadia Jewellers. Azad, who originally hailed from Bholain village in Nangalkot Upazila, Comilla, was the proprietor of the establishment on Abdul Gani Road. He had been running the shop for several years, frequently sleeping inside the premises overnight to guard his inventory.
According to local shopkeepers and police reports, Azad was last seen closing his shop on Friday evening before retiring inside for the night. Neighbours grew suspicious when the premises remained closed throughout Sunday morning and afternoon, as Azad routinely opened for trade around 9:00 am.
Alarmed by the unusual delay and a complete lack of response from inside, surrounding traders alerted Azad’s family. His brother, Md Kamal Uddin, arrived at the scene shortly afterwards alongside local residents. Finding the shutter padlocked from the outside, the group forced the lock open to investigate, discovering Azad’s body lying in a pool of blood on the shop floor. The victim sustained multiple sharp-weapon injuries across his body, alongside a severe wound to his throat.
Officers from Gacha Police Station responded swiftly to the scene, securing the area and recovering the body. The remains were subsequently transported to the Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital morgue for a full post-mortem examination. Senior officials alongside forensic teams from the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrived shortly after to gather physical evidence and analyze the crime scene.
Law enforcement authorities have not yet confirmed whether any gold ornaments, finished jewelry, or cash were stolen from the premises. Police Bureau of Investigation Superintendent for Gazipur District, Md Rokibul Akhtar, stated that a specialized PBI unit is currently conducting a thorough inventory check to ascertain if any valuables are missing from the shop.
Officer-in-Charge of Gacha Police Station, Md Golam Rabbani, confirmed that the case is being handled with the utmost priority. Preliminary evidence strongly suggests that the perpetrators carried out a premeditated attack on Azad. Investigations remain ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible, whilst authorities await the autopsy report to clarify the precise circumstances surrounding the murder.
