The official Facebook account of prominent Bangladeshi actress, director, and singer Meher Afroz Shaon has been suspended following a wave of intense online backlash. The controversy stemmed from a recent social media post she made regarding the historic July mass uprising. Users trying to access her profile discovered it was no longer visible. According to writer Tamanna Setu, a close associate of the actress, the platform’s automated systems suspended the account after it was targeted by a coordinated mass-reporting campaign.

Tamanna Setu detailed the situation in a post on her own Facebook profile on Sunday, 5 July. She revealed that Shaon had personally contacted her to share the news. Setu clarified a major point of speculation among netizens, asserting that Shaon did not voluntarily delete the controversial post that triggered the public outcry. Instead, the entire profile became inaccessible due to the suspension enforced by the platform’s security algorithms.

The digital backlash follows formal legal scrutiny. Recently, leaders of a platform called the ‘Rashtra Sanglap Forum’ filed a written complaint at the Shahbagh Police Station in Dhaka against Shaon and five other individuals. The complainants accused the group of making misleading and offensive remarks across various media outlets regarding the July mass uprising, which they argued caused widespread public confusion and disaffection.

Public anger swiftly intensified across social media channels after news of the police complaint broke. Large groups of users began reporting Shaon’s profile for violating community guidelines. Tech experts note that when a high volume of reports targets a single account within a brief period, Meta’s automated systems often restrict or suspend the profile pending a manual review.

Shaon has not yet issued an official statement regarding the suspension of her account or the allegations listed in the police complaint. Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has maintained its standard corporate policy of not commenting publicly on individual account enforcement actions. Consequently, the suspension remains verified solely by statements from the actress’s inner circle while she navigates the process of appealing against the platform’s decision.
