University Student Dies After Tongi Clash

A university student has died while undergoing treatment after being critically injured in a violent clash between two rival groups in the Pagar area of Tongi, with two other men also sustaining injuries. Police have detained one suspect as investigations continue into what authorities believe was a confrontation rooted in a long-standing local dispute.

According to police and local residents, the incident unfolded on Wednesday night, 8 July, when tensions between two groups in the Pagar neighbourhood escalated into open violence. What reportedly began as an extension of an earlier personal feud quickly developed into a fierce confrontation involving physical assaults, chases and counter-chases, leaving three people seriously injured.

Local residents rushed the injured men to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for emergency treatment. Among them was 25-year-old Manjurul Islam Hasib, a student of Green University and the son of Tofiqul Islam, a resident of the Pagar area. The other injured victims were identified as Akash, 25, and Imran Hasan Anik, 24, both local residents.

Doctors said Hasib’s condition deteriorated rapidly after he was admitted to hospital. As his injuries became increasingly critical, he was transferred to Green Life Hospital in Dhanmondi for advanced treatment. Despite intensive medical care, he succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of Thursday, 9 July.

The remaining two injured men continue to receive medical treatment. Hospital officials have not released detailed information regarding their current condition, although both are reportedly under close observation by medical staff.

Following the incident, Tongi East Police Station launched an investigation. Preliminary findings indicate that the violence stemmed from a prolonged personal and neighbourhood rivalry rather than a spontaneous altercation. Investigators are examining the sequence of events, identifying those directly involved, and determining whether the clash had been planned in advance.

Police have detained 45-year-old Zobayer Hossain, the son of Ayat Ali and a resident of the Pagar area, on suspicion of involvement in the attack. He is currently being questioned as officers seek to establish the roles of other individuals believed to have participated in the violence.

Sub-Inspector Tuhin of Tongi East Police Station confirmed Hasib’s death and said legal proceedings would now continue in accordance with the law following the victim’s passing. He added that police are working to identify and apprehend everyone responsible for the fatal assault and that further action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigation.

Law enforcement officials noted that personal disputes and long-running local rivalries can frequently escalate into serious criminal incidents when left unresolved. They stressed the importance of resolving conflicts through peaceful means, community mediation and timely reporting to the authorities before tensions spiral into violence. Officers said the investigation remains active and will focus on uncovering the precise cause of the clash, the events leading up to it and the identities of all participants.

Hasib’s death has cast a deep shadow of grief over his family, friends and neighbours. Fellow students at Green University have also expressed profound sorrow over the loss of a young life. Relatives of the deceased have called for a swift, impartial and transparent investigation, urging the authorities to ensure that everyone responsible is brought to justice. They hope the case will serve as a reminder of the devastating consequences of unresolved local conflicts and help prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
