Rain and thunderstorms are expected to continue across much of Bangladesh over the next five days as the seasonal monsoon remains active over the country, with some areas likely to receive moderate to heavy rainfall.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department issued the forecast on Thursday (27 August), warning that rainfall could remain widespread in several regions through the end of the month. Temperatures are expected to remain largely stable, although a slight fall is possible on 29 and 30 August.
According to the latest weather assessment, a low-pressure area over north-eastern Madhya Pradesh and adjoining areas has moved towards the north-west and merged with the monsoon trough. The extended portion of the monsoon trough currently stretches from Rajasthan through Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Gangetic West Bengal, then across southern Bangladesh towards Assam.
The monsoon is described as fairly active over Bangladesh, while its position over the northern Bay of Bengal remains moderate. These conditions are supporting increased moisture and instability, favouring rain and thunderstorms in different parts of the country.
For the 24 hours from 9am on 27 August, many areas of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions may experience light to moderate rain or thundershowers. Dhaka, Khulna and Barishal divisions are also likely to receive rain in some places. Temporary gusty winds may accompany the showers, while isolated areas could experience moderate heavy rainfall.
Daytime and night-time temperatures are expected to remain almost unchanged during this period.
The weather pattern is forecast to persist on 28 August. Many parts of Rangpur, Mymensingh, Chattogram and Sylhet may receive rain or thunderstorms, while some areas of Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna and Barishal could also see rainfall. Isolated moderate heavy showers are possible, with little overall change in temperatures.
On 29 August, rainfall is expected to become more widespread, with all eight administrative divisions — Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet — likely to experience rain or thundershowers in many places. Temporary gusty winds may accompany the rain. Some areas could receive moderate to heavy rainfall, while both daytime and night-time temperatures may fall slightly.
Rainfall is expected to remain a feature of the weather on 30 August across all eight divisions. Moderate to heavy showers may occur in some areas, accompanied by a slight decline in temperatures.
The forecast for 31 August also points to rain or thunderstorms in many areas of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions. Moderate to heavy rainfall remains possible in isolated areas, although temperatures are expected to remain broadly unchanged.
The extended five-day outlook indicates that the prevailing rainfall trend may continue beyond the immediate forecast period. With the monsoon remaining active, weather conditions may vary considerably from one region to another, and rainfall could occur intermittently rather than continuously throughout the day.
The possibility of gusty winds and thunderstorms also means that conditions may change quickly in areas affected by passing rain clouds. People travelling or working outdoors may therefore encounter sudden showers, particularly in regions where the forecast indicates a higher likelihood of rainfall.
For farmers, commuters and residents in areas prone to waterlogging, the continuation of rain over several days could also require attention to local weather updates. However, the forecast does not indicate a nationwide temperature surge during the period; instead, temperatures are expected to remain relatively steady, with a modest decline possible around 29 and 30 August.
