Toddler Drowns in Rainwater Near Home

A heartbreaking accident claimed the life of a two-and-a-half-year-old boy after he drowned in rainwater that had accumulated due to prolonged monsoon rainfall in western Dabuya of Rauzan Upazila, Chattogram. The tragedy, which occurred around midday on Wednesday, has left the local community in mourning, while the child’s family is struggling to come to terms with the devastating loss of their only son.

The deceased was identified as Md Mostakim, the two-and-a-half-year-old son of expatriate Mohammad Parvez Hossain, a resident of the West Dabuya area. According to family members, Mostakim had been playing near his home, as he usually did, when the incident occurred. Days of continuous rainfall had left large areas surrounding the house submerged, with stagnant water collecting in nearby low-lying land.

Residents said a canal runs beside the family’s property, and persistent rainfall had caused water to overflow into adjacent depressions, creating several shallow pools. It is believed that the toddler accidentally slipped or wandered into one of these waterlogged areas while playing unsupervised.

When the child could no longer be found, relatives launched an immediate search around the neighbourhood. After several anxious moments, they discovered him floating in the accumulated rainwater near the house. Family members quickly rescued him and rushed him to Rauzan Upazila Health Complex in the hope of saving his life.

Despite their efforts, doctors confirmed that the child had already died before reaching the hospital. Medical Officer Dr Minhaj of Rauzan Upazila Health Complex confirmed the incident, stating that Mostakim was brought to the hospital at approximately 2:30 pm on Wednesday. Following an examination, attending physicians declared him dead, after which the necessary formal procedures were completed.

The incident has deeply saddened local residents, many of whom gathered at the family’s home to offer condolences. Neighbours described the boy as cheerful and playful, making the tragedy even more distressing for the community.

Waterlogging is a recurring problem in many parts of Rauzan during the monsoon season. Continuous rainfall often leaves low-lying areas submerged, while canals, ponds, ditches and open drainage channels become increasingly hazardous, particularly for young children. Such conditions can develop rapidly, turning familiar surroundings into dangerous environments within a short period.

Local residents have urged parents and guardians to remain especially vigilant during periods of heavy rainfall. They stressed that even a brief lapse in supervision can lead to irreversible consequences, particularly where standing water is present close to homes.

Concerned citizens also highlighted several preventive measures that could help reduce similar tragedies in the future. These include draining stagnant water around residential properties as quickly as possible, installing temporary barriers or protective fencing around hazardous water bodies, covering open drains where feasible, and ensuring that young children are never left unattended near canals, ponds or flooded land.

Community members believe that greater awareness, combined with practical safety measures and constant supervision of children during the rainy season, could significantly reduce the risk of such heartbreaking accidents and help prevent further loss of young lives.
