A woman has been arrested in Bangladesh’s Brahmanbaria district after railway police allegedly uncovered 50 yaba tablets concealed in a private part of her body during a targeted operation aimed at preventing narcotics trafficking by rail.
The suspect, identified as Sabitri Rani Brahma, 50, is a resident of Banikpara in Ward No. 5 of Akhaura Municipality in Brahmanbaria district and the wife of Nirmal Brahma. She has since been sent to jail after a case was filed against her under the country’s Narcotics Control Act.
According to railway police, the incident took place at around 11:00 am on Monday, 6 July, when the Chattala Express, travelling from Akhaura to Dhaka, arrived at Brahmanbaria Railway Station. Law enforcement officials had received intelligence indicating that a female passenger was attempting to transport yaba tablets to the capital by concealing them on her body.
Acting on the tip-off, a team from the Brahmanbaria Railway Police Outpost took up positions at the station before the train arrived. After identifying the suspected passenger, officers conducted a search in the presence of a female police officer, in accordance with legal procedures governing the search of women.
During the search, police allegedly recovered a small packet containing 50 yaba tablets hidden in a private part of the woman’s body. The narcotics were seized immediately, and she was detained at the scene before being formally arrested following initial questioning.
Sub-Inspector Md Shah Alam Mia, officer-in-charge of the Brahmanbaria Railway Police Outpost, confirmed the arrest on Wednesday night. He said the operation had been carried out based on confidential intelligence and resulted in the successful seizure of the yaba tablets.
He added that a case had been registered against the accused under the Narcotics Control Act. After being produced before a court, she was remanded to judicial custody on the judge’s order.
Police said investigations are continuing to determine whether the woman was acting alone or as part of a wider drug trafficking network. Officers are also examining the intended destination of the consignment and whether other individuals were involved in organising or facilitating the attempted transport.
Yaba, a highly addictive illicit drug commonly containing methamphetamine and caffeine, remains one of the most frequently trafficked narcotics in Bangladesh. Authorities have long warned that organised criminal groups employ increasingly sophisticated methods to evade detection while transporting the drug between districts and into major urban centres.
According to law enforcement officials, smugglers regularly attempt to conceal narcotics in luggage, clothing, parcels and, in some cases, within their bodies to avoid routine security checks. Such tactics have prompted railway police and other agencies to strengthen intelligence gathering, passenger profiling and surveillance at railway stations and aboard intercity trains.
Officials said searches involving female passengers are conducted by female police personnel while observing the legal safeguards required under Bangladeshi law. Railway police also emphasised that intelligence-led operations have become an important part of efforts to curb drug trafficking through the country’s rail network.
Authorities stated that regular monitoring, surprise inspections and coordinated anti-narcotics operations are continuing across railway stations and trains. They expressed hope that sustained enforcement and stronger intelligence activities would further reduce the use of rail transport for illegal drug smuggling in the months ahead.
