A severe gas leak explosion in the Fatullah area of Narayanganj district has left four members of the same family with significant burn injuries. The incident occurred at approximately 06:00 on Monday in a rented tin-shed residence located in the Laki Bazar area of Kutubpur, Fatullah.
Incident Overview and Casualties
The explosion took place at the home of Abdul Kadir, a local street food vendor specialising in Halim and Chotpoti. According to witnesses and local law enforcement, a sudden blast caused the doors and windows of the house to be blown outwards. Mr Kadir’s wife was outside the premises at the time of the explosion and remained unharmed. However, Abdul Kadir and his three sons sustained varying degrees of burn injuries and were subsequently rushed to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka.
Medical officials have provided the following details regarding the victims and the extent of their injuries:
| Victim Name | Age | Extent of Burns (Percentage) |
| Abdul Kadir | 50 | 57% |
| Rakib | 16 | 25% |
| Mehedi | 17 | 18% |
| Sakib | 16 | 17% |
Official Investigation
The Senior Station Officer of the Hajiganj Fire Service and Civil Defence, Mr Nurul Alam, stated that a leak in the gas pipeline had allowed gas to accumulate within the enclosed room overnight, creating a combustible environment. It is suspected that an electric spark or an external ignition source triggered the blast. Fire service experts are scheduled to conduct a formal investigation to determine the precise cause of the ignition.
Related Fatality from Sunday’s Explosion
This incident follows a similar gas-related tragedy in Fatullah that occurred on Sunday. In that instance, five members of another family were injured in the North Bhuighar Giridhara area. On Monday at approximately 11:00, the head of that household, 35-year-old Abul Kalam, succumbed to his injuries at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
Dr Shaon Bin Rahman, a resident physician at the institute, confirmed that Mr Kalam had suffered burns to 95% of his body. The deceased, a vegetable vendor originally from Bauphal, Patuakhali, had been injured alongside his wife, Sayma (32), and their three children. The remaining four family members remain in a critical condition under medical supervision.
