Police have arrested two suspected drug traffickers after recovering 16,000 yaba tablets from a private car during a special operation at Daudkandi Toll Plaza on the Dhaka–Chattogram Highway in Cumilla.
The operation was carried out on Thursday morning following intelligence indicating that a large consignment of illegal drugs was being transported through the busy highway corridor. Officers intercepted a private vehicle at the toll plaza and conducted a thorough search, leading to the recovery of the narcotics concealed inside the car.
The two men arrested during the operation were identified as Md Firoz, 46, a resident of Nasirabad under Double Mooring Police Station in Chattogram and son of the late Abdul Aziz, and Md Milon Gazi, 38, a resident of Nayanagar village in Gazaria Upazila of Munshiganj and son of the late Dulal Gazi.
According to police, the recovered yaba tablets were seized as evidence and both suspects were taken into custody at the scene. A case has since been filed against them under the country’s narcotics laws, and further legal proceedings are under way.
Officer-in-Charge Sajedul Islam Palash of Daudkandi Police Station said the operation was launched on the basis of confidential information received by law enforcement. Acting on the tip-off, officers established surveillance at the toll plaza and stopped the suspected vehicle for inspection. The subsequent search resulted in the recovery of 16,000 yaba tablets, leading to the immediate arrest of the two occupants.
Investigators are now working to determine the origin of the seized drugs, their intended destination and whether the suspects are linked to a larger organised drug trafficking network. Police said the investigation would also focus on identifying any additional individuals involved in transporting or distributing the narcotics.
The Dhaka–Chattogram Highway is one of Bangladesh’s busiest transport routes and has frequently been the focus of anti-narcotics operations because of its strategic importance for passenger and commercial traffic. Law enforcement agencies regularly conduct intelligence-led searches and checkpoint operations along the corridor to disrupt the movement of illegal drugs.
Police reiterated that their campaign against narcotics would continue and that strict legal action would be taken against anyone found involved in the trafficking, transportation or distribution of illicit substances.
