Three More Children Die Amid Measles Symptoms

The number of child deaths linked to measles symptoms has risen again in Bangladesh, with three more children reported dead over the past 24 hours. Although no new laboratory-confirmed measles deaths were recorded during the same period, health authorities say the continued rise in suspected cases remains a serious public health concern.

According to the latest routine situation report released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Friday, 128 new laboratory-confirmed measles cases were identified across the country within the last day. During the same reporting period, a further 901 people were found to be exhibiting symptoms consistent with measles and are currently receiving medical treatment and clinical monitoring.

The latest figures indicate that since the current outbreak began on 15 March this year, a total of 750 children have died after developing symptoms associated with measles. The cumulative number of suspected measles cases has now reached 109,899, highlighting the sustained spread of the disease across multiple parts of the country. Public health experts say the steady increase in new infections underlines the need for continued surveillance and rapid intervention to limit further transmission.

Health officials have stressed that while suspected deaths are reported based on clinical symptoms, laboratory confirmation remains an essential step in determining whether measles was the direct cause. The absence of newly confirmed measles-related deaths in the latest reporting period does not diminish the seriousness of the outbreak, as investigations into suspected cases often take time to complete.

Measles is among the most contagious viral diseases affecting children and can spread rapidly within communities where immunity levels are low. The virus is transmitted through respiratory droplets released when an infected person coughs, sneezes or even breathes in close proximity to others. Because of its highly infectious nature, a single case can quickly lead to multiple secondary infections, particularly in densely populated areas or where vaccination coverage is incomplete.

The illness typically begins with a high fever, persistent cough, runny nose and inflamed, red eyes. Within a few days, a characteristic red rash develops and spreads across the body. While many children recover with appropriate care, measles can cause severe complications, including pneumonia, diarrhoeal disease, encephalitis and other life-threatening conditions. The greatest risks are faced by malnourished children, those with weakened immune systems and children who have not received the recommended doses of the measles vaccine.

Public health specialists continue to emphasise that routine immunisation remains the most effective defence against measles. They are urging parents and caregivers to ensure that eligible children receive all recommended vaccine doses on schedule. Prompt medical attention at the onset of symptoms can also help reduce the risk of severe complications and improve recovery outcomes.

Experts also recommend isolating infected children from others to reduce transmission, maintaining good personal hygiene, encouraging frequent handwashing and seeking professional medical advice rather than relying on self-medication. Early diagnosis and supportive treatment are considered essential in limiting both the severity of illness and the spread of infection.

The DGHS said it is continuing to monitor the outbreak closely through nationwide disease surveillance. Health facilities have been instructed to remain prepared for a potential increase in patient numbers and to ensure that suspected and confirmed cases receive timely medical care. The authority is updating infection data on a daily basis to support public health planning and response efforts.

Health experts believe that controlling the outbreak will require coordinated action involving families, local administrations and healthcare providers. They argue that strengthening routine immunisation, improving public awareness and ensuring universal participation in childhood vaccination programmes will be critical to reducing infections and preventing avoidable child deaths in the months ahead.
