At least 10 people were injured after a long-running dispute over land ownership erupted into a violent clash between two groups in Mohabbatpur village of Khetlal Upazila in Bangladesh’s Joypurhat district on Friday morning, 10 July. The injured were rescued with the assistance of local residents and admitted to Khetlal Upazila Health Complex and Joypurhat General Hospital for treatment. Although tensions briefly escalated in the area following the incident, the situation is now reported to be under the close observation of law enforcement authorities.
Among those injured from one side are Abdul Hakim Sardar, Abdul Gafur, Najidul Sardar, Jamiul Hossain, Abu Sayed, Nadim Sardar and Naju Bibi. The opposing group includes the injured Manjurul and Beljan. Local sources said another individual was also hurt during the confrontation, although that person’s identity had not been confirmed immediately.
According to Abdul Hakim Sardar, the dispute stems from a piece of land measuring nine decimals that he purchased in 2020 from Nurunnahan, the daughter of Abdul Latif, a resident of Mohabbatpur village. He claimed that he had remained in possession of the property since the purchase. The disagreement began when Nurunnahan’s younger sister, Sharmin, later asserted ownership over the same plot. Since then, both parties have remained locked in a prolonged legal and personal dispute, with a court case concerning the ownership currently pending.
Hakim alleged that on Friday morning Sharmin and her supporters attempted to take possession of the disputed land. He and members of his family intervened, leading to a heated argument that quickly turned violent. Local residents said both groups attacked one another using sticks and other improvised weapons. Men and women from both sides became involved in the confrontation, leaving at least 10 people injured.
Residents rushed the injured to Khetlal Upazila Health Complex immediately after the clash. Several of those with more serious injuries were later transferred to Joypurhat General Hospital for advanced treatment. Hospital sources said the injured were receiving the necessary medical care, while doctors continued to monitor their conditions.
Land disputes remain one of the most common causes of violence in rural Bangladesh. Conflicts involving ownership, possession and inheritance frequently become prolonged legal battles, and tensions often rise when one party attempts to establish physical control over disputed property before the courts have delivered a final verdict. Legal experts and local administrators have repeatedly stressed that parties involved in such disputes should rely on the judicial process and seek administrative assistance rather than attempting to resolve matters through confrontation.
Officer-in-Charge Moktadul Hossain of Khetlal Police Station confirmed that the violence was triggered by the ongoing land dispute. He said police visited the scene after receiving reports of the incident and assessed the situation to prevent any further deterioration.
He added that neither side had submitted a written complaint or filed a formal case as of Friday. Police said an investigation would begin once a complaint is received, and legal action would be taken against those found responsible in accordance with the law. Officers are also maintaining heightened surveillance in the area to ensure that no fresh tensions or further violence occur while the ownership dispute remains
