Fatally Wounded Driver Reaches Mirsarai in His Own Lorry

A lorry driver who was critically injured in an armed attack in Brahmanbaria died while his vehicle continued its journey towards Chattogram Port, after instructing his assistant to keep driving to safety. Following the driver’s final request, the helper drove the lorry carrying his employer’s body to Mirsarai, where police later recovered the deceased from the parked vehicle.

The incident came to light on Tuesday (14 July) at around 7:30 am, when officers from Jorarganj Police Station recovered the bloodstained body of 56-year-old lorry driver Jamal Uddin from a goods vehicle parked outside the Fardin Model Pump in the South Sonapahar area of Jorarganj Union.

Jamal Uddin was a resident of North Char Aicha in Char Fasson Upazila of Bhola district and the son of the late Munaf Bepari.

According to the driver’s assistant, Belal Hossain, the pair had departed from Sherpur in Sylhet late on Monday night with a cargo consignment destined for Chattogram Port. As they reached the Ujanisar Bridge area in Brahmanbaria during the early hours of the morning, the narrow section of the road forced the vehicle to slow down.

Belal said that four to five assailants armed with locally made weapons suddenly attacked the lorry. They first smashed the front windscreen before assaulting the driver with sharp weapons, inflicting multiple serious injuries. Despite his condition, Jamal Uddin reportedly managed to bandage his wounds as best he could and instructed his assistant not to stop the vehicle under any circumstances until they reached a safer location.

Belal said he continued driving in a state of panic, following the driver’s instructions. The journey continued towards Feni, but the driver gradually lost consciousness because of severe blood loss. Before they could reach their destination, Jamal Uddin succumbed to his injuries inside the vehicle.

After realising that the driver had died, Belal contacted other lorry drivers for assistance. Acting on their advice, he drove the vehicle to the Fardin Model Pump area in Mirsarai and informed the local police about what had happened.

Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Abdul Halim of Jorarganj Police Station said officers immediately responded to the report and recovered the body from the lorry. Initial observations revealed multiple injuries caused by sharp weapons on different parts of the victim’s body.

The body has been sent to the Chattogram Medical College Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination, and the victim’s family has been informed of the incident.

The police official added that, since the attack took place within the jurisdiction of Brahmanbaria district, the relevant police station there would conduct the criminal investigation and complete all subsequent legal proceedings. Jorarganj Police have coordinated the initial recovery of the body before handing over responsibility to the appropriate investigating authority.

The incident has once again raised concerns over the safety of freight transport workers travelling on highways at night. Long-distance lorry drivers frequently pass through isolated stretches of road, where reduced traffic and slower vehicle speeds can leave them vulnerable to criminal attacks. The circumstances surrounding this case are now expected to form the basis of the formal investigation by the authorities responsible for the area where the assault occurred.
