Hidden Gold Bars Seized at Airport

A joint operation by Bangladesh’s intelligence authorities and customs officials has uncovered a major gold smuggling attempt at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, where at least 16 kilograms of gold bars were found concealed inside crates of imported fruit.

The seizure was made on Sunday (19 July) during an operation at the airport’s Cargo Village. According to officials, the gold had been hidden using a sophisticated concealment method inside fruit cartons, suggesting an organised effort to move the precious metal through commercial cargo while avoiding detection.

Sources familiar with the operation said the raid was launched after intelligence agencies received specific information about a suspicious shipment. Acting on that intelligence, members of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), working alongside officers from Dhaka Customs House, inspected the consignment and recovered the concealed gold bars.

Investigators believe the shipment was part of a wider smuggling network that attempted to use imported fruit as a cover for transporting high-value contraband into the country. Although the exact origin of the consignment has not yet been disclosed, authorities are examining shipping documents and other evidence to determine where the cargo came from and how the smuggling operation was organised.

Officials have confirmed that efforts are now under way to identify and arrest everyone involved in the attempted smuggling. Investigators are also trying to establish whether the seizure is linked to any broader international trafficking network or previous gold smuggling cases handled by law enforcement agencies.

Gold smuggling remains a persistent challenge for customs and border authorities because of the metal’s high value and strong demand in domestic markets. Smugglers frequently attempt to conceal gold in passenger luggage, courier parcels or commercial cargo in an effort to evade customs duties and regulatory checks. As a result, intelligence-led inspections and coordinated operations between security agencies have become an important part of efforts to disrupt such activities.

The authorities have not yet released details about the number of gold bars recovered, their estimated market value, or whether any arrests were made during the operation. They have indicated that a more detailed statement will be issued once the initial investigation progresses and additional facts have been verified.

The seized gold has been taken into official custody, while the investigation continues to trace the shipment’s origin, identify those responsible and determine the full extent of the alleged smuggling network.
