Dengue Death Toll Rises as Infections Climb

Bangladesh’s dengue situation is becoming increasingly alarming as fresh infections continue to rise during the peak monsoon season. In the latest 24-hour reporting period, three more people died from dengue-related complications, while another 372 patients were admitted to hospitals across the country, highlighting the growing public health challenge posed by the mosquito-borne disease.

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the latest figures cover the period from 8:00 a.m. on Sunday to 8:00 a.m. on Monday. The daily dengue bulletin shows that hospitals nationwide continue to receive a steady flow of new patients, reflecting the seasonal surge typically associated with increased rainfall and the spread of Aedes mosquitoes.

A regional breakdown of the latest admissions indicates that Dhaka Division, excluding the two city corporations, recorded the highest number of new hospitalisations with 103 patients. Barishal Division followed with 67 cases, while Chattogram Division reported 54. Dhaka South City Corporation registered 52 new admissions, compared with 22 in Dhaka North City Corporation. Khulna Division recorded 43 cases, Mymensingh 21, Rangpur six, and Rajshahi four.

The latest figures reinforce concerns that dengue transmission is accelerating as the rainy season creates favourable breeding conditions for Aedes mosquitoes. Public health officials have repeatedly warned that stagnant clean water in residential areas, construction sites, rooftops, flower pots, discarded tyres, water containers and similar locations provides ideal breeding grounds for the vector responsible for spreading the virus.

The cumulative picture for 2026 also points to a significant rise in infections. Since the beginning of the year, 10,857 dengue patients have been admitted to hospitals across Bangladesh. Of those, 4,753 cases have been reported in July alone, meaning the current month accounts for a substantial share of the annual caseload. The figures suggest that transmission has intensified rapidly during the monsoon period, a trend that health authorities are monitoring closely.

Fatalities have also increased noticeably. With the latest three deaths, the nationwide dengue death toll has reached 37 this year. July alone has accounted for 19 of those fatalities, making it the deadliest month of the year so far. Earlier in the year, two dengue-related deaths were recorded in January, another two in February, one in May and 13 in June. The sharp increase in July has heightened concerns among health professionals, who fear that the burden on healthcare facilities could continue to grow if transmission is not brought under control.

Health experts stress that hospital treatment alone cannot curb the outbreak. They argue that preventing mosquito breeding remains the most effective way to reduce infections. Since Aedes mosquitoes breed primarily in clean, stagnant water, households and communities are being urged to inspect their surroundings regularly and eliminate any potential breeding sites.

Medical professionals also advise the public to seek prompt medical attention if symptoms such as persistent fever, severe headache, body aches, pain behind the eyes, nausea or unusual weakness develop. Early diagnosis and timely treatment are considered crucial in preventing severe complications associated with dengue.

The DGHS said it is maintaining continuous surveillance of the dengue situation and ensuring that healthcare facilities remain prepared to treat patients. Authorities added that efforts to control mosquito breeding and strengthen disease prevention are ongoing. Public health specialists believe, however, that lasting control of dengue will require coordinated action involving local administrations, city corporations and the public, alongside sustained awareness campaigns and environmental management throughout the monsoon season.
