Football Dispute Turns Fatal As Youth Dies In Stabbing

A 26-year-old man has died after allegedly being stabbed following a dispute over a football match in Kalinjo village of Pangasi Union under Raiganj Upazila in Sirajganj district.

The incident took place at around 10:30pm on Sunday (19 July) in the Kalinjo Bazar area. The deceased, identified as Md Ilias Khan, was the son of Sattar Khan, a resident of the same village.

According to local residents, the trouble began earlier in the afternoon during a football match held in the village. A verbal altercation reportedly broke out between Ilias Khan and a local youth named Russell while the game was underway. Although the dispute appeared to have ended at the time, tensions reportedly resurfaced later in the night.

Local sources alleged that Russell and his son, Siam Ahmed, attacked Ilias with a sharp weapon in the Kalinjo Bazar area following the earlier disagreement. The attack left Ilias critically injured. Nearby residents rushed him to Raiganj Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead after his condition deteriorated.

The incident sparked concern among local people, with many gathering in the area following the news of the death. Police were informed immediately and officers arrived at the scene to bring the situation under control.

Mohammad Zahurul Islam, a local union council member from Kalinjo, said police reached the spot soon after receiving information about the incident and took necessary steps to prevent any further unrest.

Raiganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Ahsanuzzaman said police had visited the scene and launched an investigation to determine the exact circumstances behind the killing. He added that preparations were underway to send the body to the morgue of Shaheed M Monsur Ali Medical College Hospital in Sirajganj for a post-mortem examination.

Police said that Russell and his son Siam Ahmed had gone into hiding after the incident. Efforts were continuing to locate and arrest them. Authorities are also investigating whether the football-related dispute was the sole reason behind the attack or whether there were any other underlying issues.

No case had been formally filed at the police station at the time of reporting. However, police said legal action would be taken after receiving a formal complaint from the victim’s family.

The incident has created grief and tension among residents of Kalinjo village. Community members have expressed concern over how a disagreement linked to a sporting event escalated into a fatal act of violence. Additional police personnel have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order and prevent any further confrontation.
