Police Chase Suspects Across Tin Roofs in Drug Raid

A dramatic anti-drug operation in Haji Mazar slum area of Tongi, Gazipur Metropolitan City, drew attention after police officers climbed onto tin rooftops while pursuing suspects attempting to flee during the raid. The operation, which began on Sunday (19 July) afternoon and continued until 10pm, resulted in the recovery of a significant quantity of narcotics and the detention of 40 people suspected of drug consumption.

The special operation was carried out under the overall direction of Gazipur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Israil Hawladar. Additional DIG (Crime and Operations) Mohammad Belayet Hossain led the field operation, which aimed to identify individuals involved in drug trading and consumption in the densely populated Haji Mazar slum area and take legal action against them.

Police officials said conducting operations in the area was challenging because of its narrow lanes, tightly packed houses and complex layout. As soon as law enforcement teams entered the area, several suspects allegedly tried to escape by moving through houses and using the interconnected tin roofs as an escape route.

During the pursuit, a number of individuals attempted to run across the rooftops of tin structures to avoid arrest. Additional DIG Mohammad Belayet Hossain personally climbed onto the roofs and chased the fleeing suspects, according to police officials. His action became one of the most talked-about moments of the operation, with residents witnessing the unusual scene.

After securing the area, police teams surrounded different sections of the slum and conducted searches in multiple groups. Officers blocked possible escape routes and detained suspects one by one. The operation was carried out carefully to prevent further attempts to flee and to ensure that evidence could be collected properly.

Local residents said drug-related activities have long been a concern in several densely populated areas, where criminals often use difficult terrain and crowded surroundings to avoid law enforcement. They added that suspects frequently attempt unconventional escape methods during police raids, but quick action by officers prevented those attempts from succeeding this time.

According to Gazipur Metropolitan Police, the operation led to the recovery of around 270 grams of heroin, 20 yaba tablets and various items associated with drug consumption. Authorities are examining the recovered substances and verifying the identities and alleged involvement of those detained before taking further legal steps.
