Five-Day Rain Spell Forecast Across Much of Bangladesh

Rain has begun in Dhaka and several other parts of Bangladesh, bringing temporary relief from the heat as the Meteorological Department forecast that wet conditions could persist across the country for the next five days.

Light rain started falling in several parts of the capital at around 11.30am on Wednesday. The development came as the weather authorities issued a five-day forecast at 9am, indicating a widespread chance of rain of varying intensity in almost all divisions.

According to the forecast for Wednesday, most areas of Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions may experience light to moderate rain or thundershowers. Similar conditions are expected in many parts of Rajshahi, Rangpur, Mymensingh, Dhaka and Sylhet divisions. Some areas of Barishal and Chattogram could receive heavy to very heavy rainfall.

Daytime and night-time temperatures are expected to remain largely unchanged across the country on Wednesday. The rain, however, may provide some respite from the prevailing heat, although high humidity could continue to make the weather feel warm and muggy.

The wet pattern is likely to continue on Thursday. Most areas of Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions, along with many parts of Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet, may receive light to moderate rain. Some locations could see heavier downpours, with a possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram. Daytime temperatures may fall slightly, while night-time temperatures are unlikely to change significantly.

Rain is also forecast across all eight divisions on Friday. Most areas of Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram may receive rain, while many parts of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh and Sylhet could experience light to moderate showers. Some parts of the country may also see moderate to heavy rainfall.

On Saturday, the geographical distribution of rainfall may shift somewhat, although wet conditions are expected to remain widespread. Many areas of Khulna, Barishal and Sylhet may receive rain, while some parts of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh and Chattogram could experience moderate showers. Moderate to heavy rain is possible in isolated areas.

The five-day forecast ends on Sunday, when the rain trend is expected to persist. Many areas of Khulna, Barishal and Sylhet, as well as some parts of Rajshahi, Rangpur, Dhaka, Mymensingh and Chattogram, may receive light to moderate rain. Some locations could experience moderate to heavy rainfall.

The prolonged spell of rain may bring mixed consequences for daily life. In urban areas, particularly in low-lying neighbourhoods and places with inadequate drainage, heavy showers could lead to temporary waterlogging. Commuters may face slower traffic and delays, while outdoor activities and routine work could be disrupted during periods of intense rainfall.

The impact will depend largely on the amount and duration of rain in individual areas, as well as the effectiveness of local drainage systems. Short spells of rain may offer relief without causing major disruption, whereas persistent heavy rainfall could create more serious difficulties for transport and urban movement.
