A woman’s reported departure with a neighbouring young man has sparked discussion in Mymensingh’s Ishwarganj, after her husband alleged that an extramarital relationship was behind the incident and claimed that she had taken gold jewellery and cash from their home.

The incident reportedly occurred in Brindasthan village under Rajibpur Union of Ishwarganj Upazila. The woman’s husband, Manindra Chandra Dey, submitted a written complaint to Ishwarganj Police Station on Tuesday (21 July), naming local resident Rudra Chandra Dey in connection with his allegations.

According to the complaint, Manindra has been married to Jharna Rani for around seven years. The couple have a six-year-old son. Manindra said he has been working as an employee at a hotel away from home for a considerable period to support his family and meet their financial needs.

He alleged that during his absence, his wife developed a close relationship with Rudra Chandra Dey, a young man living in the neighbourhood. Manindra claimed that he had become aware of the alleged relationship before his wife left home and had warned her against maintaining such a relationship. He also said he had informed members of Rudra’s family about the matter, hoping that the situation would be resolved.

However, according to Manindra, his efforts did not bring about any change. He alleged that Jharna left their home on 1 July and later learned that she had gone away with Rudra.

The husband also claimed that she took around two bhori of gold jewellery and Tk 45,000 in cash when she left. The allegation has become part of the written complaint submitted to the police, although the truth of the claim has yet to be established through an investigation.

Members of Rudra Chandra Dey’s family, however, have offered a different account. They reportedly claimed that Jharna and Rudra had developed a romantic relationship through communication over mobile phones. They also said they had learned that Jharna had divorced her husband. No written or legal documentation supporting that claim has so far been produced, according to the information available.

As a result, several aspects of the incident remain unclear. It is yet to be determined whether Jharna left the family home of her own accord, whether she was taken away against her will, and whether the alleged gold jewellery and cash were actually removed from the house. These questions are expected to be addressed during the police investigation.

The case has also drawn attention locally because of the conflicting accounts from the parties involved. Allegations concerning marital relationships and the circumstances surrounding a person’s departure from a household can be highly sensitive, making verification of statements and supporting evidence particularly important.

Ishwarganj Police Station officer-in-charge Robiul Azam said the police had received a written complaint. He said the allegations would be investigated and that necessary legal action would be taken based on the findings.

Until the investigation is completed and the relevant statements and documents are examined, none of the competing claims can be treated as conclusively established. The police inquiry is expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding Jharna Rani’s departure, her current whereabouts and the allegations concerning the jewellery and cash.
