Kishoreganj Siblings Drown in Pond While Playing Near Home

Two siblings drowned in a pond in Mithamoin upazila of Kishoreganj on Wednesday morning, in a tragic incident that has left their family and the local community mourning.

The deceased children were identified as Rifat Mia, 4, and his younger sister Safa Akter, 2. They were the children of Rubel Mia of Khalapara village in Ghagra Union, where the incident took place.

According to local residents, the children were playing near a pond beside their home at around 10am on Wednesday, 29 July. At one point, Safa apparently fell into the water. In an attempt to rescue his younger sister, Rifat also entered the pond and was subsequently submerged.

Residents who noticed the children in the pond rushed to the scene and pulled both of them from the water. They were taken to Mithamoin Upazila Health Complex in an effort to save their lives. However, doctors examined the children and declared them dead.

Mithamoin Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Abdullah-Al-Shafi said the two children had died before they were brought to the health complex.

The incident was also reported to police. Assistant Sub-Inspector Rezaul Karim of Mithamoin Police Station said officers visited the scene after receiving information about the deaths. He added that the necessary legal procedures were under way.

The deaths have once again highlighted the dangers faced by young children living close to ponds and other open water bodies. In many rural areas of Bangladesh, ponds are a common feature around homes and are frequently used for household activities, fishing and bathing. For young children, however, such water bodies can pose a serious risk, particularly when they are playing without close adult supervision.

Child drowning remains a major concern in Bangladesh, where children can be particularly vulnerable because of their proximity to ponds, canals, rivers and other bodies of water. Safety experts and public health advocates have repeatedly stressed the need for constant supervision of young children around water, along with practical measures such as barriers around ponds and community-based swimming and water-safety education.

For the family of Rifat and Safa, however, those broader concerns have become a deeply personal tragedy. The deaths of the two young siblings in the same incident have cast a pall of grief over Khalapara village, as relatives and neighbours mourn the loss of the children.
