Motorcyclist Killed as Speeding Sand Truck Hits Bike in Bogura

A 25-year-old motorcyclist was killed and his younger brother was seriously injured after a speeding sand-laden truck struck their motorcycle in Dhunat upazila of Bogura on Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Sohel Rana, 25, son of Babu Mia from Munshipara in Sherpur upazila. His younger brother, Rabbi Hasan, 18, who was travelling with him on the motorcycle, sustained serious injuries in the crash and was taken to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura for treatment.

The accident occurred near the Bathuabadri Bridge on the Dhunat-Sherpur regional road on Wednesday, 29 July.

According to police and local residents, Sohel and Rabbi had been travelling towards their home in Munshipara after leaving their father-in-law’s residence in Rangamati village of Dhunat. They were riding along the regional road when they reached the area near Bathuabadri Bridge.

At that point, a sand-carrying truck coming from the opposite direction reportedly collided with their motorcycle at high speed. The impact threw the two brothers from the motorcycle. Sohel suffered critical injuries and died at the scene.

Local people rushed to the spot following the crash and rescued the injured Rabbi. He was taken to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital, commonly known as Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital, where he was admitted for treatment. The extent of his injuries was not immediately disclosed.

The incident has once again raised concerns among residents about road safety on the Dhunat-Sherpur regional route. Locals alleged that sand-laden heavy vehicles frequently travel along the road at excessive speeds, creating significant risks for motorcyclists, pedestrians and other road users. They called for stricter monitoring of heavy vehicles and stronger enforcement of traffic regulations to prevent similar accidents.

Dhunat Police Station Officer-in-Charge Atikul Islam said police were informed of the accident and promptly reached the scene. Officers seized the truck involved in the collision, but its driver and helper had fled before police arrived.

The officer said the body was handed over to Sohel’s family after the necessary legal procedures were completed. Police are expected to take further legal action in connection with the incident, while efforts to identify and locate those who fled the scene are continuing.

The crash has left a family mourning the sudden loss of a young man, while his younger brother remains under medical care. The incident also highlights continuing concerns over the dangers posed by speeding heavy vehicles on regional roads, particularly in areas where motorcycles and other smaller vehicles share the same routes.
