Tragic Loss: Upazila Health Officer Dies After Falling Ill at Work

A profound sense of grief has swept through the medical community and the residents of Netrokona following the sudden and untimely demise of Dr Momenul Islam, the Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer (UH&FPO) for Mohanganj. The 45-year-old health official passed away on Saturday afternoon after falling critically ill immediately after concluding an official meeting at his workplace.

Sequence of Events

According to official sources from the Mohanganj Upazila Health Complex, Dr Islam was presiding over a scheduled administrative meeting at the health centre on Saturday morning. Shortly after the meeting concluded, he reported feeling acutely unwell and began vomiting blood.

Attending medical staff at the health complex immediately initiated emergency treatment to stabilise his condition. However, as his health deteriorated rapidly, the decision was taken to transfer him urgently to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for specialised tertiary care. Upon arrival at around 2:30 pm, the medical officer on duty in the emergency department pronounced him dead.

The Civil Surgeon of Netrokona, Dr Golam Moula, confirmed the tragic news, expressing deep sorrow over the unexpected loss of a dedicated healthcare leader.

Dr Momenul Islam was a respected officer of the 33rd Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) Health Cadre. An alumnus of the prestigious Rajshahi Medical College, he dedicated his professional life to strengthening healthcare service delivery across public medical institutes. Hailing from Roumari Upazila in Kurigram district, Dr Islam was widely regarded by colleagues for his professionalism, integrity, and proactive leadership.

He officially assumed the role of Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer in Mohanganj in May 2025. During his tenure, he played a crucial role in managing local public health initiatives, supervising rural health centres, and improving primary healthcare accessibility for the grassroots population.
