The price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) has risen again for consumers in Bangladesh, with the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) announcing a new retail price for August.
Under the revised pricing structure, the price of a 12-kilogram LPG cylinder has been increased by Tk70 to Tk1,598. The previous retail price was Tk1,528, meaning consumers will now have to pay an additional Tk70 for the same-sized cylinder.
BERC announced the revised price on Sunday (2 August) through an official notification covering LPG prices for the month of August. The commission said the newly fixed consumer price applies at retail points and includes value-added tax (VAT).
The new price came into effect at 6pm on Sunday. According to BERC, the revised rate will remain in force until a further order is issued.
The latest increase is expected to affect households that depend on LPG cylinders for cooking, particularly those outside areas served by piped natural gas. For many families, LPG has become an important source of household energy, making changes in cylinder prices a direct concern for monthly budgets.
The Tk70 increase represents a rise of roughly 4.6 per cent compared with the previous price. Although the adjustment applies specifically to the 12kg cylinder, changes in the regulated price can also influence the broader LPG retail market, particularly where consumers use different cylinder sizes or purchase LPG for commercial purposes.
BERC regularly reviews and adjusts LPG prices in line with relevant market conditions and cost factors. The pricing process takes account of factors associated with the LPG supply chain, including import-related expenses and other costs involved in bringing the fuel to consumers. As a result, retail prices may change from one period to another depending on prevailing conditions.
The commission’s announcement also sets out a clear effective time for the revised price, giving retailers and consumers a specific point from which the new rate is applicable. The notified price is intended to cover the consumer-level retail market, with VAT included in the stated amount.
The latest adjustment also places renewed attention on compliance with the officially determined retail price. Consumers often remain concerned about whether LPG cylinders are being sold at the regulated rate, particularly when market conditions create uncertainty around supply and distribution. Effective monitoring is therefore important to ensure that the officially announced price is followed at retail outlets.
For now, consumers buying a 12kg LPG cylinder will pay Tk1,598 at the retail level, compared with Tk1,528 previously. The revised price will remain applicable until BERC issues another order changing the rate.
The increase comes at a time when household energy costs remain an important issue for consumers. For families that rely heavily on LPG, even a relatively modest rise in the price of a single cylinder can add to regular household expenses, particularly for those purchasing cylinders frequently.
With the latest decision, the 12kg LPG cylinder has become Tk70 more expensive for consumers. The new rate, effective from Sunday evening, will remain in place until further instructions from the country’s energy price regulator.
