A 21-year-old man was rescued in a critical condition with a severe throat injury and multiple wounds from a jungle beside a railway line in Saidpur, Nilphamari, on Monday morning.

The injured man, identified as Hridoy Islam, was initially taken to the emergency department of Saidpur 100-bed Hospital by local residents. As his condition deteriorated following significant blood loss, doctors provided preliminary treatment before referring him to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for advanced medical care.

The incident came to light at around 7am on Monday, 3 August, when several local residents who had gone out for their morning walk noticed Hridoy lying inside a wooded area beside the railway line near the boundary wall of the railway workshop in the Islambagh Chini Mosque area of Saidpur town.

According to local residents, the young man was found covered in blood, with visible injuries around his neck apparently caused by a sharp weapon. He also had similar injuries on his hands and legs. Concerned residents immediately contacted the national emergency service 999 and informed the police. However, before officers arrived at the scene, some locals rescued Hridoy and rushed him to hospital in an attempt to save his life.

Police later visited the site where the injured man had been found and went to the hospital to gather information about his condition and the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Hridoy is the son of Mahubar Rahman of Chowra Bagichapara in Saidpur upazila. He works at a hotel, where he is employed in making bread. Police and family members reportedly sought to establish his identity and contact his relatives after finding a mobile phone number written on a piece of paper in his pocket. The information eventually led to contact with his family, and his mother-in-law, Mina Begum, went to the hospital after learning about the incident.

Mina said Hridoy had married her daughter about a year and a half ago and that the couple have a young child. According to the family, Hridoy travelled to Natore last Friday with two acquaintances from the same area, identified as Momtazul and Jahangir, reportedly in connection with work.

The family, however, has not yet been able to establish how Hridoy returned to Saidpur, where he had been in the intervening period or who may have inflicted the injuries. They also remain unclear about the circumstances in which he ended up in the isolated area beside the railway line.

His movements after travelling to Natore, the people accompanying him and his possible route back to Saidpur are now likely to form an important part of the police investigation. Investigators may also seek information from residents and potential witnesses in the vicinity of the railway line to determine whether anyone saw Hridoy before he was found.

Emergency department doctor Haiyul Kabir Rajib said Hridoy had a serious injury to his neck consistent with an assault involving a sharp weapon. Injuries were also found on his hands and legs. The doctor said the young man was in a critical condition because of excessive blood loss and was referred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital after receiving initial treatment.

The exact nature of the incident remains unclear. Police have not yet established whether Hridoy was the victim of a deliberate attack, attempted suicide or another circumstance. No conclusion has been reached about where the injuries were inflicted or why he was left beside the railway line.

Saidpur Police Station officer-in-charge Rezaul Karim Reza said officers went to both the location and the hospital after receiving information about the incident. He said the matter was being investigated seriously and that further details would be provided once more information emerged.

Investigators are expected to examine Hridoy’s movements before the incident, his reported trip to Natore, his possible return journey and his association with the two men who allegedly travelled with him. Police are also likely to consider information from the local community and any available evidence from the area where he was discovered.

Until the investigation establishes the facts, the circumstances behind the young man’s injuries and the identity of any person responsible remain unknown.
