Eight members belonging to the Bangladesh Awami League and its associate bodies, including key local youth and student leaders, have been arrested following coordinated police operations across Savar.
Officers from the Savar Model Police Station conducted overnight drives across various locations within the sub-district, culminating in the arrests in the early hours of Monday. Saiful Alam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Savar Model Police Station, confirmed the development during a media briefing later in the morning.
Among those apprehended are Sheikh Tuhin, 32, Organisational Secretary of the Savar Sadar Union Jubo League and resident of the Laltek area, alongside Md Akash, 39, former president of the Aminbazar Union Chhatra League hailing from Singair, Manikganj. The remaining suspects have been identified as Raju Khan, 39, from Mirpur; Anwar Hossain, 50, originating from Jhalakathi; Ruhul Amin Rajib, 38, of Dogarmora in Savar Municipality; Md Ariful Islam, 24, from Gaibandha; Mohammad Ali, 36, from Madaripur; and Murad Hossain, 45, hailing from Manikganj Sadar.
According to law enforcement officials, the arrestees are active members of the former ruling party and its affiliated wings, including the Jubo League and Bangladesh Chhatra League. Police intelligence indicates that the group was actively plotting acts of sabotage and attempting to destabilise the industrial hub through flash processions and covert political gatherings. Key evidence and incriminatory materials were seized from their possession during the intelligence-led raids.
Savar, an industrial nexus situated on the outskirts of Dhaka, has seen heightened security protocols following recent political transitions across the country. Law enforcement agencies have intensified intelligence surveillance to prevent sudden disruptions to public order and ensure the smooth operation of local commerce and the ready-made garment sector.
Commenting on the operation, OC Saiful Alam stated that regular drives and round-the-clock monitoring are ongoing to maintain law and order. A case under the Anti-Terrorism Act has been registered against the suspects. He added that preliminary interrogations yielded crucial information regarding several other associates, with further raids underway to apprehend the remaining suspects. Police plan to produce the arrestees in court with a remand prayer to facilitate deeper interrogation.
