Police in Chandanaish, Chattogram, have arrested two individuals over alleged involvement in recent flash processions and suspected plans to carry out acts of sabotage around 5 August, observed as July Mass Uprising Day.

The arrested men have been identified as Jamshed, 22, son of Jahangir Alam, and Mehedi Hasan Shifat, 23, son of Kamal Uddin. Both are residents of Ward No. 4 in Borkal Union of Chandanaish Upazila. Jamshed has been described as a leader of the Bangladesh Chhatra League, while Shifat has been identified as a Jubo League leader.

According to police and local sources, the two men had gone to Barma Union on Sunday night for what was described as organisational activities. Acting on information received from a confidential source, police conducted an operation in the area and arrested them.

There have also been claims from some local residents that the two men appeared to be under the influence of drugs at the time of their arrest. However, no official confirmation of such a claim has been provided by police.

Local Union Parishad member Anisul Islam said he was not present at the scene when the arrests took place. He said he had heard from local residents that the two men had allegedly consumed yaba. He also claimed that some people had distorted his remarks and were spreading misinformation by suggesting that he had said yaba was found in their possession.

Chandanaish police said they have information linking the two men to a number of recent processions involving the banned organisation. Officer-in-Charge S M Didarul Islam Sikder said police had obtained photographs and video footage allegedly showing the two men participating in processions alongside Mizanur Rahman, a former senior vice-president of the Chattogram South District unit of the Chhatra League, who police said had led several such processions in the area recently.

The police officer said the authorities were taking preventive measures to ensure that no acts of sabotage or disruption were carried out in connection with 5 August. Law enforcement agencies have been monitoring activities and gathering information to prevent any deterioration of the local law-and-order situation, he added.

The two arrested men were produced before a court on Monday and subsequently sent to jail under a judicial order.

Police said the investigation into the allegations is continuing. The claims against the two men will be subject to the legal process, and their guilt or innocence will ultimately be determined by the competent court.
