A madrasa headteacher has been arrested in Chattogram’s Banshkhali over allegations that he sexually abused an eight-year-old student, according to the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
The accused, identified as 31-year-old Mohammad Ramiz Uddin, was arrested by a team of RAB-7 during an operation in the Bairag area of China Road, near the Karnaphuli Tunnel in Anwara upazila, at around noon on Monday (3 August).
RAB-7 said Ramiz Uddin is the headteacher of Banshkhali Daruchchunnah Khairia Madrasa and Orphanage.
According to the case statement, the child was studying in the Nazera section of the madrasa. The complaint alleges that after the child enrolled at the institution, the headteacher took him to a washroom on several occasions and sexually abused him.
The latest alleged incident reportedly took place on the afternoon of 23 July. After classes ended, other students went outside to play, while the child was allegedly called to a classroom on the second floor of the orphanage’s Hifz section, where the abuse is said to have occurred. The case statement also alleges that the child was threatened and warned not to disclose what had happened.
The child later returned home and reportedly became distressed, telling his mother that he did not want to return to the madrasa. According to the complaint, he eventually disclosed the alleged abuse to his mother.
The child’s father subsequently filed a case at Banshkhali Police Station on 29 July under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
Following the filing of the case, Ramiz Uddin allegedly went into hiding. RAB officials said they received information about his whereabouts and identified his location in the Anwara area before conducting the operation that led to his arrest.
A.R.M. Mozaffar Hossain, assistant director (media) of RAB-7 and assistant superintendent of police, said the accused was arrested based on information obtained through a confidential source. He was later handed over to Banshkhali Police Station for further legal proceedings.
The allegations against Ramiz Uddin remain subject to investigation and judicial proceedings. The case will now proceed through the relevant legal process, while investigators are expected to examine the allegations and evidence surrounding the incident.
