A 45-year-old man died after sustaining a gunshot wound to the head inside a house in the Hajipara area of Double Mooring in Chattogram city on Saturday morning.
The deceased was identified as Shahid Hossain, a resident of the same area. His father was the late Iqbal Hossain and his mother is Momtaz Begum.
According to information provided by local sources and people associated with Chattogram Medical College Hospital, Shahid was taken to the hospital at around 7.50am after being found with a serious gunshot injury. He was subsequently admitted to Ward 28, where doctors attempted to save his life. Despite receiving treatment, he died in hospital.
People who accompanied Shahid to the hospital reportedly told authorities that he had shot himself in the head with a pistol while inside the drawing room of the house. The circumstances surrounding the shooting, however, have not yet been fully established. It remains unclear who else, if anyone, was present at the house when the gun was fired.
Double Mooring police said their initial information indicated that Shahid had sustained the fatal injury from a gunshot fired by himself. Sub-Inspector Mohammad Gafur Mia said police were investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident before reaching any final conclusion.
Investigators are expected to examine several aspects of the case, including the exact sequence of events, the presence of other people at the scene and the source and ownership of the pistol. The legality of the firearm will also be an important part of the investigation. Police may also examine physical evidence from the scene and gather statements from family members, neighbours and others who may have information about what happened before the shooting.
Shahid had reportedly worked at a bank several years ago but left the job around two years ago. Details of his activities or occupation since then were not immediately available.
The cause of the shooting has not been established. Police are therefore expected to consider the available evidence before determining whether the incident was a case of suicide, an accidental discharge or involved any other circumstances. A post-mortem examination and other investigative procedures are likely to assist authorities in establishing the nature and cause of death.
The incident has caused concern among residents of the Hajipara area. Family members and relatives may also be questioned as investigators seek to build a clearer account of the events leading up to the shooting.
Police have stressed that the investigation is still at an early stage and that no definitive conclusion about the motive or circumstances should be drawn until the relevant evidence has been examined.
