Decomposing Bodies of Four Family Members Recovered in Rangpur

Police in Rangpur have uncovered the decomposing remains of a retired schoolmaster, his wife, and their two children scattered across different storeys of their locked multi-storey home. The deceased have been identified as Ganapati Chakraborty Jewel, 65, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty Bala, 50, their 25-year-old daughter Prarthi Chakraborty, and their 12-year-old son, Priyam Chakraborty.

The family’s residential building had stood locked from the exterior for a succession of days, drawing little notice from neighbours until a pungent, foul stench began drifting into the street. Alarmed by the intensifying odour, residents alerted the authorities. A police contingent arrived shortly afterwards, breaking open the heavy padlocks on the primary boundary gate to enter the premises.

Officers were met with a disturbing scene across several floors of the residence. Nazmul Kader, Officer-in-Charge of Rangpur Kotwali Police Station, detailed that the young boy, Priyam, was found lying dead beneath a bed frame inside a second-floor room. Further along the internal corridor, the bodies of Pritilata and her daughter Prarthi were found collapsed together on the flight of stairs leading to the third level. The retired educator, Ganapati Chakraborty, was discovered dead on the open rooftop terrace.

Investigating officers suspect the deaths could stem from a premeditated homicidal plot or an internal domestic tragedy. To preserve the integrity of the scene, crime scene specialists and forensic examiners from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) cordoned off the structure, lifting latent fingerprints, collecting biological evidence, and mapping the spatial distribution of the deceased.

The remains have been transferred to the Rangpur Medical College Hospital morgue for formal post-mortem examinations, with autopsy reports expected to determine the exact cause, mechanism, and chronological timeline of the fatalities.

Providing details on the operation, OC Nazmul Kader noted that the locked exterior gate necessitated a forced entry before officers could systematically search the property. CID forensic investigators continue to comb the interior for vital forensic leads, working to ascertain whether outside intruders breached the residence or if the deaths arose entirely from within the domestic setting.

Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner (DIG) Mohammad Abdul Mabud affirmed that the incident is receiving the highest investigative priority. Detectives are interviewing neighbours, examining perimeter security footage, and checking financial and personal records to reconstruct the precise sequence of events leading to the deaths.
