A fire broke out at a market in Mirsarai, Chattogram, early on Saturday, destroying three furniture shops and damaging a large quantity of furniture, timber and other goods. No casualties have been reported in connection with the incident.
The fire started at around 2am on Saturday, 22 August, at Jorarganj Bazar in Mirsarai upazila, in front of the Textile Engineering College. The affected shops were all furniture businesses, according to the owners.
The three shopkeepers whose businesses were damaged have been identified as Abdullah Al Noman, Didar Hossain and Mezbaul Alam. They said furniture, wooden materials and other merchandise stored inside the shops were burnt in the blaze, causing significant losses. The extent of the financial damage had not been officially determined at the time of reporting.
Zainal Abedin Titash, in-charge of the Bariyarhat Fire Service and Civil Defence station, said the initial assessment indicated that an electrical short circuit may have caused the fire. He said three adjoining shop units, all used for furniture businesses, were affected.
After receiving information about the incident, fire service personnel rushed to the scene and began efforts to contain the blaze. Their intervention prevented the fire from spreading further, although the three furniture shops were already badly damaged by the time the flames were brought under control.
Furniture shops can be particularly vulnerable to rapidly spreading fires because they often contain large quantities of timber, plywood, upholstery, varnish and other combustible materials. Electrical faults can also become a serious hazard in commercial premises where wiring, lighting and electrical equipment are heavily used.
The incident has once again highlighted the risks faced by businesses operating in busy market areas, particularly those storing large amounts of combustible goods. Fire safety officials generally stress the need for properly maintained electrical connections, adequate fire-fighting equipment and clear access routes so that emergency responders can reach affected premises quickly.
Authorities have not indicated that anyone was injured in Saturday’s fire. The precise cause of the blaze will require further assessment, while the affected shopkeepers now face the task of determining the full extent of their losses and assessing the impact on their businesses.
